The Bunker Busters

Through most of the war, hardened German targets had proven nearly impervious to conventional attacks. But starting after mid 1944, a new British weapon appeared: the Tallboy -- a 12,000 lb, 21 ft long “earthquake bomb”. It was designed to drop from high altitude, attain a high terminal velocity, penetrate deep into earth, rock, or concrete, then detonate to create a gigantic crater, demolishing the target’s structure.
Tallboy missions, using specially modified Lancasters, were flown against u-boat pens, e-boat pens, V-1 bunkers, viaducts, dams, and tunnels, at locations ranging from the coast of France, to coastal Germany and the Baltic, to the fjords of Norway.
In the same time frame, rocket-armed Mosquitoes were ranging around coastal areas from France to Norway and the Baltic, attacking shipping, u-boats, and related facilities.
Now it’s time for a collection of late-war action of Tallboy-armed Lancasters and RP-armed Mosquitos going after the last refuge of the Luftwaffe, specifically northern Germany. With Spitfire XIV’s, Mustang IV’s, Lancasters, and Mosquito VI’s vs. late-war Bf 109K’s and FW 190D’s.
