I've lost my mind
« on: Yesterday at 09:28:32 AM »
Dealing with these health issues I just sit around the house now and do nothing. I work on plastic models and play video games when I can sit in my gaming chair for extended times. I'm getting better I reckon but, I'm bored to death to say the least as the wife and kids are doing my chores now....for the most part.

Over the weekend I was all hopped up on Halloween candy and totally gutted my computer case and got on Newegg and started throwing crap in the shopping cart. By the time I was done I was at $3100.00 and will got by Friday. Here's what I got.

 Motherboard...ASUS TUF GAMING B650E-PLUS WIFI AMD B650

PSU...MSI A1000 PCIe 1000 watts

GPU..ASUS Prime GeForce RTX 5070 Ti

CPU...AMD Ryzen 9800 X3D

SSD...SK hynix Platinum P51 2TB PCIe Gen5 NVMe M.2 2280 Internal SSD ..with another 1TB I already have.

Cooling ..MSI Mag CoreLiguid RGB A15 360mm......CPU cooler.

Phanteks RGB 120mm case cooling fans alone with 2 I already have.

Ram...G.SKILL Trident Z5 Neo RGB Series 64GB (2 x 32GB)...4 sticks total of 128GB

Sound...Creative Sound BlasterX AE-5 Plus SABRE32-class Hi-res 32-bit/384 kHz PCIe Gaming Sound Card RGB.

That's about it I think. I did get a stand to hold up the GPU. I already have it and it's pretty heavy. This should keep my mind busy for a spell I reckon. The problem is, that this morning I'm staring at a empty computer case bored as I can be wondering what the hell have I done this time!  :bhead

There is no such thing as memory overkill. ;)

Have you compared to some pre-built systems?

I've heard the pre-built system have gotten cheap enough it's not worth hand building.  Might be worth a sanity check before you hit the buy button. ;)

I'm with Trips here. I think for that money a prebuilt may be better. Assuming you haven't already pulled the trigger. If you have then happy flying just the same.

Yes I pulled the trigger and the stuff is otw. And yes a prebuilt with the same specs are the same price or within a couple hundred dollars of one another. I didn't set out to buy so much but wanted to see what I could come up with on my own. Besides, every pre built rig I've bought in the past, always had something I didn't like about it. The 550 watt PSU on the one I just tore apart, for example. As a matter of fact, 2 months after I got it, the CPU took a dump on me. I just don't trust pre-built gaming computers anymore.  The cost really didn't concern me too much as a was blessed with a financial windfall here a while back, so it was free money really.

I do play another game (DCS) on occasion but mostly AcesHigh, but want the ability to play any game that may catch my interest in the future without having to worry if I have enough computer to play it.

I think what it all boils down to is I wanted to build something all at once instead of doing it 1 piece at a time which would take months and a lot more of a hassle.

Looks like a nice computer  :aok

I have built all of my desktops since the 286 in 92..find it rewarding when it comes together and works as expected ..  :joystick:

You need VR for that box..enjoy assembling and setup .. :airplane:

It will handle DCS on the highest settings non VR. It will handle VR nicely too but some compromise may be necessary there depending on the headset.

Another advantage is a pre-built system has hopefully been tested so you know all the components play well together.

I guess it can get more complicated if you are piecing together various parts yourself.

Cyberpower is where I go, they have a pre-builds you can modify in their builder. Even build theory making and playing around.

I have one of those as my spare machine.  Bought in 2015 and still running.   ;)
(I have upgraded some parts along the way.  Vid card, mem, etc.)

Personally I build my own after a couple nasty surprises I've gotten with prebuilts. I also like that I can hand me down the old components and re-purpose the older ones.

That said if there's a manufacture that uses quality components and overbuilds their systems (not a power supply that is barely enough to drive the currently configuration) for example, I would consider them.

I’ve always built my own.

I found out the hard way with Dell - $1,800.

Had lightning surge that cooked the power supply.
Dell went proprietary parts. Meaning they made it so only their PS will work,…$610 replacement. All their replacement parts are very high.

Or a self built PS $125.- $175

I almost went with a VR setup but wasn't sure about how that would workout with me wearing eyeglasses now. I don't know if they'll fit over them. I use Trackir now and don't really like it in AcesHigh to tell the truth.
