A Mismatched 109G-10
« on: Yesterday at 11:15:41 PM »
Bf 109G-10 of 6./JG 52 surrendered to American troops at Ainring, southern Germany on May 8th 1945. II/JG 52 had been fighting against Soviet forces in eastern Austria and southern Czechoslovakia in the final months of the war. All squadrons escaped capture by the Russians by flying west on May 8th, most landing at Neubiberg, surrendering to the Americans there. But "Yellow 6", "Yellow 12", and "Black 12" only went as far as Ainring.

"Yellow 6" was the most visually interesting of these three. It was originally built in the Wiener-Newstadt production system in late 1944 or early 1945 and initially used by the Gruppenstab of I/JG 53 as evidenced by the over-painted Ace of Spades emblem on the cowl and the chevron/triangle shaped cover-ups on the fuselage. Yellow nose band and rudder served as IFF markings. I/Jg 53 was disbanded and it's aircraft were given to II/JG 52, probably along with the pilots and crews. At this point this plane was made part of 6./JG 52 and given it's yellow number and Gruppe bar. What isn't known is when the port wing was replaced with an all light green unit. Even the insignia positions differ from the starboard wing. The aircraft's spine was painted in a solid color, which is unusual and might be evidence of repair. One of the plane's pilots decorated the fuselage under the canopy with a "pissing" man.
