Recent RAM prices . . . incredible
« on: November 24, 2025, 04:30:46 PM »
RAM prices are now 3x (!) what I paid 6 months ago.

First, Bitcoin and AI made GPU's crazy expensive and hard to find.

Now, AI has done EVEN WORSE to RAM.

Thank goodness a game as fantastic to play as AH does not require high specs to enjoy completely..

Even worse worse, both Bitcoin and AI can easily have bubble burst that would make those prices all for nothing.

Yes, but --

I am always recruiting people into Brooke's Bomber Mafia for flying with me in scenarios.  Sometimes they don't have a suitable computer.  Then the deal is sometimes that I provide a suitable computer (for AH, not more than that) -- if they agree to fly in every scenario with me going forward.  Doing that now costs $550 instead of the $400 it was in days gone by.

Also, it irks me that ancient computer stuff that used to go drastically down in price over time now goes UP over time.  Like GT 1030's.  8gb DDR4-3200.  Basic nvme's.  Feels like a competency crisis in producing things in the world.

When I bought my ram, I paid over $1000 for it. Later it went down. Covid was the culprit then.

Covid has had a lasting affect on all prices.

Covid has had a lasting affect on all prices.

When you double the money supply without producing anything, bad things happen..

Brooke, I might have some ddr4 sticks laying around that I'd be willing to donate to the cause. Let me know if you're interested I have to go dig them out of my stash.

That is very generous! <S>!  They are pretty valuable these days, though -- you might want to hold onto them in case prices get even more crazy.  For example, 2x8 gb of DDR4-3200 is like $110.

Wow! That's nuts.

I bought 2 8GB of DDR3 for $16.99 for my kids computer on August 20 and
2 16GB of DDR4 RAM  for $59.99 on July 16

I have a ton of extra 8GB sticks of DDR4 but it is 2400 and 2666 speed, so a bit slower but likely fine for an AH use case.

Many thanks, my friend.  I will keep that in mind, as it would likely be fine.  I'm hoping I'll have one system to build prior to March scenario if I can succeed in my pressure recruiting tactics.  :aok

I just checked through some ram I have up here at the shop. I had let a couple of the guys get some awhile back. Looks like all that is left I very old 512mb and some 1gb along with a few 2gb sticks of Crucial DDR3 1600. Old stuff indeed.

I have more at home I can check through. Much of this at the shop is only good for someone who likes to strip gold.
