How do you guys edit screenshots?
« on: December 12, 2001, 06:21:00 PM »
I tried to edit a screenshot from AH, but I got an error that Photoshop couldn't open it.  What program do you use?  How do you open the screenshots?

I noticed the same problem in photoshop.

Do it this way:

Open AH screenshot in paint. Then select all (whole picture), ctrl + c and then go to photoshop, create new, ctrl + v and there it is.

Gimp is my graphics program of choice.  It has no issues with Aces High's screenshot bitmaps.

if you only want to re-size the bitmaps and convert them to JPEG, use IrfanView (free at www.irfanview.com)

If you re-save the shot in paint or a different program as a bitmap, you will be able to open it in photoshop.

Hey Sancho,
I typically use Photoshop and Illustrator. I downloaded Gimp, but haven't really used it (or read about it, yet). I was just wondering, is it just a bitmap editor like photoshop, or does it also posses vector graphic capabilites like Illustrator as well?

Gimp (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a basically a Photoshop freeware clone--bitmap editing with layers, filters, etc.  It doesn't have Illustrator-like vector features.

If you already own Photoshop and are comfortable using it, there's really no reason to use Gimp.  I'm like both programs, but prefer Gimp, probably just because I've used it longer.  I also like the Gimp because it is free and available for many different operating systems.

I use Paint Shop Pro. It's pretty much identical to Photoshop, and has no issues with opening screenshots. It's available for a 30 day evaluation too.

OK.. new question.. How do you guys make the screenshots look all pretty-like?  Mine always end up looking like well... blurry screenshots.

Depends on what program you're using, Urchin.  I can tell you in Gimp, if you save as JPEG, you can diminish blurriness in two ways in "Save as JPEG" dialog box:
• Raise the "Quality" slider
 • Use "1x1,1x1,1x1" subsampling instead of the default "2x2,1x1,1x1"
yes, gimp reads .gif.  But it needs a plugin to write .gif files.

When you take screenshots, the bigger resolution you got the better results. 1280 x 1024 is enough. Lower resolution gives blurry images. You can use film by that if you dont fly that high resolution.

Resize this big image  800 x 600 or even smaller and result will be good.

I have been using Irfan View.  It was rated high on C-Net downloads.  It is free, easy to use, and a lot of nice features.
