How about some more like "Check Six"?
« on: July 25, 2001, 01:35:00 AM »
I really think this "Check Six" command is one of the BEST!! things added to this game.. and I'm wondering if we might be able to get maybe some more easy-in-flight communication commands to help people with out communications devices like a mike-set and Roger Wilco.

 "Break Right!"
 "Break left!"
 "Git' this guy off me!!!"
"Hey Butt off! That's my target!"  :D
 "You have a cute arse!"  :D  :D  :D

etc etc... so on, so on...

And It would even be better if those voice recordings sound like real.. like those voices chatter in EAW or something  :)

 What do you people think?

I think that's a very nice idea, especially for the ones, like me, RW-impaired   ;)

Great idea Kweasea.  I would want to keep it somewhat limited though and keep it directed at an individual plane.  That way we could avoid some of the things you find in Tribes 2 that has an extensive "message" library:

(1) Filling the audio with constant useless chatter.  Lord knows I get tired of hearing "Shazbot!", "Stupid is as stupid does!", "Woohoo!" all the time in Tribes 2!.  It's funny the 1st few times but then it gets really irritating after that.

(2) Creating a huge database of messages and a subsequent keystrokes that you have to remember to access those messages.  My poor countryman would be dead long before I finished fumbling around on the keyboard trying to tell 'em to "check 6!" or "break right!" or something.

Question:

Which is more valuable to you.. more control options on your airplane or taking up those key presses with those commands?

Remember, in order for those commands to work like the check 6 command.. it needs to occupy a different key on the keyboard (and we ain't got many left) and each key must be hit repeatedly until you have that person highlighted.

I suggest no more hot keys for messages.  The check 6 gets ur attention well enough.  Having those other messages might be nice for responsible players, but abuse will be the rule, I'm afraid.

A good idea in theory, but I think it would be too complicated in practice.  We already have plenty of false "check six" messages, without adding more possiblities for error.

Well.. this idea occured to me cuz' I had just one button left on the Joystick that was free  :) Mine's MS Sidewinder PR2, and I programmed the check6 call to the button at the right of the hat key, so I can give out quick warnings as fast as I can. Annnnd... the button below that one's currently free.. and I thought about which kind of messages I type in usually that needs to be promptly sent.. and that was "On my way, hang on".

I won't mind if I don't get any of the other messages I wanted above, if I can get just that one, "on my way".. that functions like the "check 6".

When people are in some deep sh*t, they rarely seem to concentrate on the radio, and especially at the prime hours where zillions of messages just roll roll roll on .. crucial message "omw" that pops up at the radio for 1 sec. then gets smothered...

I truly think we just need that one message "On my way", with voice recording, so it would get enough attention to the guy who's being badly chased and didn't notice the three-letter, 1 sec "omw" type message that got smothered and disappeared.

 ..

Surely, won't there be just one, one more room for one more message?

Please please please.. "On My Way" message.. please please please...

LOL!  Half the time any Check6 calls I get refer to bogies on my 12!  I think even more confusion would be caused with Break Right or Left!   :)

As for the voice, I did consider recording my own Check6 with my female voice, but then realised only I would hear it!   ;)

Actually if you used a sequenced key system for radio messages like EAW you could probably get quite a few types of messages without losing hardly any valuable keys by sharing them.

E.g.- single key activates the drop down menu of categories of messages.  Next key pulls up messages that could be issued in an category.  Next key issues the message.  The message menus would leave the any shared keys hot for messages until issued or cancelled or timeout.

This doesn't solve any of the other issues brought up such as radio abuse, confusion of who the message goes to, key fumbling etc.  Just a possible solution to re-using keys.

Kweasea- if I only had the choice of 1 other message I would be torn between OMW and Help!

Flossy- no disrespect to HTC but I'm sure your voice would be a great improvement over the default "check 6" call!  Add a little more passion to it like you really mean it and I bet "check 6" would make people jump even higher out of there seats!

How do you select who it goes to? Once you have them selected, it takes you another 5-15 seconds to select your command. By the time it gets there it's 20 seconds later.

Doesn't seem worthwhile to me.

SW- I also said that the key sequence doesn't solve the "who does this go to" problem  :).  However, you've got me thinking a little.

Perhaps a way you might solve that is again similar to how EAW or BoB does.  You might use a system based on grouping recipients as "country", "squadron", "flight", "wingman".  Squadron, flight, and wingman would be something you predetermine as who those are with dot commands like .wingman etc.  You might access the who you are sending the message to as part of the key sequence.

I agree, this may not be worthwhile.  Then again history is full of examples of things that many said "it couldn't be done" only to be proven wrong by someone who figured how it could be done.

Flossy- it would at least be memorable and attention getting- does the trick right?  Maybe would could also add your voice like in the F16 that says "pull-up, pull-up" to help warn folks who are about to auger in!

Hmm,I know I'm gonna get trashed for this but I wish there was no "Check 6" call.It lessens situational awareness skill. It's almost like every plane has one of those rearward motion detectors you find on Ford Windstars. You get a warning for not watching behind you.Yeah,I know my butt's been saved many, many times by this feature, but I really feel if you're not winging with anyone on RW,you are not entitled to the oh so easy to do"Check 6"call.
