Who wants to fly a goon - No one
« Reply #15 on: April 17, 2000, 12:20:00 PM »
The only time I turn down an offer to fly a goon is if I am already in the air and far from landing anywhere.

Otherwise, I will take a goon.  It's slow, it's unarmed....but the reward of helping the team outweighs all the other stuff.

If 90% of the people were willing to fly goons, I probably would not.  Since not that many actually step up, I get to imagine myself as part of some elite group that has an important job: mop-up of the previous 15 min-1 hour's worth of work at taking a field to advance the country.

Sounds corney but that's what it boils down to for me.

Who wants to fly  a goons? ME! I like to fly goons: about 25% of my missions are in 47's & I consider it some of the most exciting flying to be had in AH.

But I *never* fly a goon in response to "Someone get a goon to 11 now!" type messages. By the time my C47 might arrive at the aforementioned field 11 it will be most likely chock-full of vulch-seeking allies and goon-hunting bandits.  Those who aren't coordinated enough to include a goon from the outset are unlikely to be coordinated enough to secure air superiority at a field to the extent required to get a goon in successfully.  That's why most *real* goon drivers don't respond to impromptu requests after the field in question is allegedly 'ready' for a goon.

There are more than a few dedicated and experienced 47 drivers out there.  What others have already stated in this thread is the key:  Get the goon (or several) involved from the outset.  Don't expect a 47 jockey to jump into a goon at the beck & call of someone whose very request for the 47 indicates they aren't as coordinated as they need to be.

Also- I'd rather the C47 driver who captures a field NOT be identified to the enemy.  There are plenty of crafty and intelligent people on all sides and even a little bit of information may tell them far more than one might imagine at first glance.
