scores scores scores
« on: April 15, 2000, 02:51:00 PM »
We all like to pick out the catagory that we do well in and say thats what matters. I can think of a way the game makes that meaningless for every thing but number of kills. For example KIll to DEATH. I hard lock/ disco at least 3 times a night. Ive had one of these happen to me as many as 15 times in a night. These are all deaths and any scores I had at the time I got screwed on. With the captured rule a player can be very good and not do well in scoreing. Unless he hugs ack, the percentages are aginst him big time.. About the only thing the system cant cheat u out of is number of kills. So that is what I look at.

Ive seen these "the only thing that matters" post many times . I just wondered what your goal is and why you chose it.

Hey, you're figuring it out.

The scoring is porked, so I ignore it.

Until ditches are kills (like real life), AAA kills are not awarded to ack-huggers, and you don't lose kills when you bail out, I don't pay attention to the score pages.

My goal is to have fun, and blow stuff up.

Even total number of kills is a meaningless statistic that depends entirely on the amount of time one flies rather than how well one flies.

The thing that matters most to me is just flying and having fun.  I like to kill stuff, I like to mix it up, and most of all I like a fun fight.  The real joy in Aces High or any online air combat sim for me is the fight itself rather than the kill (though those are satisfying too); I'd rather have one truly amazing fight than one hundred vulch kills.

Ol, Torque has gotten some flack about time online in the past. This never made sense to me. I dont see how enjoying the game enough to play more is a cheat.

This is not ment as an arguement. im just curious.

IMHO, Kills/Loss is only way to measure pilots qualities (if You're checking fighter pilots scores...)

Ok Im sick, but at least Im happy with it ,=)

I like competition, and if not against others then against myself.
So I set myself a goal for a TOD and the means to get there.I use evenings for kvantitative training, for kvalitative ditto, and evenings for the present goal.
Best "official" measure IMO at the moment for fighter jocks is the k\d, but its true that a lot is left to be desired ie bails should not count as deaths, ditches should count as kills ect.
Also the statistics could be much more diversitive: like streaks, JABO stats, bus stats, stats for 100 best fighters in each plane, best squads section ect.
Ronni has at one time said that they might build the "statistical department" further out wich will be great.
Defts scoring page in wb are really cool (especially Yak's and Avin's score), but the AH could be miles ahead.

Enough.Gotta take my pills.

Well, I didn't say that playing a lot was a "cheat."  Rather, someone who plays more than another is practically guaranteed to have more total kills.  It's not a skill issue, and as such you can't compare players against one another using this measure.  My point was that you need to keep this in mind; someone with 2500 kills may or may not be a better player than someone with 250... the measure simply does not tell us enough to allow us to compare.

OK, so Joe-Blow flies for six hours and gets a whopping 15 kills in his time online, while  Hairball has an hour between chores to play and he gets 10 kills.  Joe-Blow has more kills, but does that make him the better pilot?  Definately not!  Hairball clearly got 4 times the kills per unit of time, so looking at the number of kills is mostly useless for comparing pilots.  K/D is the only real way to tell the skill of the pilot in question, but since that's porked, the only way to tell is to see which pilot is filling up the text buffer with victories

Frankly I like the way score is accumulated now. Pilots who display skill in all aspects of the game are rewarded with a higher ranking than the one dimensional furball types. EZMury said it best-"keep your scores and your streaks in your pants where they belong",

I suscribe more to the following line of thought.

Even that is secondary to a well planned and executed squad mission-win or lose.
