Abnoxious Sociopath Squelch Control
« on: April 16, 2000, 10:41:00 AM »
We've all experienced him: the loud-mouthed 16 year old using language that could make a sailor blush, flaming anyone who tries to get him to settle down. For half an hour we read this stream of words, anything that comes into this guy's head is typed out on freq 1 or 2. Enough! Here is a possible solution: the squelch control.

What we need is the ability for a large number of players to remove this guys frequency 1 (or 2) rights for an hour at a time. The number of players required to "squelch" a player should be large (15-20?) so that the device is not used to simply remove someone whose opinion you disagree with or who is mildly obnoxious.

When a terminally-abnoxious player starts monopolizing the frequency, other players could type in a command ".squelch playerid". If the critical number of .squelch requests are reached, poof! he's silent!

Of course it would be necessary to keep players from voting more than twice, so that this doesn't resemble a Chicago mayoral election.

Your thoughts?

NOTE:
After posting this message, I learned below that a .squelch command already exists in Aces High. I now suggest we use this existing command to handle the problem. The first three responses below were made by others who hadn't yet seen this note.

I kinda agree with this but I could see the possiblity that this could be abused.

What is HT's policy on profane behavior?  If someone starts fraggin me (this was the old game, you all know the name of it), I tend to get a screen shot, with the guilty party's name clearly posted and then I send an e-mail off to the company basically telling them that I don't care for this kind of verbage being directed my way.

I am sure that HT doesn't condone this kind of language in the game.  I know I don't care to listen to someone use these profanities, especially when a lot of these posts are coming from people who are not, lets just say, 'mature' enough to control their tempers.

A .ignore command would be good for me.  If I could just tune out some smart aleck then I will be happy.  In a way it is kind of just deserts, he can type all he wants and I won't see him.

.squelch GameID
.unsquelch GameID or ALL

Squelching works, but it is temporary (per session).

Danish-
I appreciate your concerns, but the idea is to NOT have votes on socially-acceptable behavior. The idea is to require so many players to participate that only the exceptionally-irritating can be squelched. Perhaps we need a higher number. Would 30 players be enough? We need to send a message to the sociopath.

Cofield-
An "ignore" command would indeed be a step in the right direction, but it doesn't send any real message to the culprit. In the past months of AH play, I would have only used the .squelch command twice (once would have been last night).

I don't think that Aces High needs to be involved in determining who should be allowed to fly this sim. They should be writing code. I think it is better if we players handle things ourselves.

Azrael-

Thanks for the link. I didn't know that such a command existed.

Last night, a large number of players typed in the phrase "squelch (playerid)" on freq 1 to let this player know that they wanted to turn him off. I suggest that any time you squelch a player (so you don't hear him) you also let him know by typing "squelch (playerid)" on freq 1. Send this guy a message.

Well, if anyone feels offended enough to publicy announce this it's ok, but please don't give the squelched player a message.

Sometimes people are just annoying, bragging or whining and i have no further problems with them, just don't want to listen to them. No vote, no message.

Besides that, you can afaik also squelch channel 1 (.squelch 1)

What I would like to see is a file called "squelch.txt".

All handles contained in "squelch.txt" will automatically squelched upon entering the arena.
