I took a P-51 in TA in an attempt to coonvert Animal to a 190 pilot  .

I could, repeatedly, hit him from d1.4 (my FE). First he was going straight on autopilot and then a shallow right hand turn.

Now I know why it's a good idea to weave a bit when yer extending  .

If you do not believe me, ask Animal.  

It's worth noting that I've scored hits with German 13mm mgs out to about 650, which is pretty damned good in my book  .

Just curious... How many times did you kill him?  I can't hit at 1.4 but with a little luck I can hit at about 1.1, I don't seem to do much damage past about .8 tho.  This seems pretty fair... even with 6 fifry calibers you shouldn't get many hits from that distance.  Certainly, Browning fifties are capable of diong it tho.   German 13mm are not even in the same league.

I've hit people at 1.2k with the .50s this tour, but it seldomely does damage.  I only do it to try to get them to turn, so I haven't really wasted alot of ammo trying it (short bursts only).

This is well within the range of a .50 calibre bullet.  I just doubt the accuracy at that range.

Yea I've pinged people at 1.2 and more also. When they are extending away and not paying attention to you or if your in a furball situation pinging them a few times usaly gets em to turn, then they die  . But I've never caused major damage with the pony's 50's over about 1.0 or so.

Heck, I've never caused major damage with the Jug's 8 .50's over about 600.  Anything over 400 is rare to do damage with for me.  My convergence is 325.

.50s are great to hit something moving fast at great distance, like a barage fire. The problem is that you need to hit the guy a lot. On a lanc for example, I used 75% of my P47 ammo at 1k range. Kept hitting hit, but he was still flying.

Can't really use the snap shot too on  the .50s planes, u generally need to spray it for at least 2 secs to down the enemy for sure.

It's a trade, cannons have the 3-4 ping kill but have a slow rate of fire, .50s have a very high rate of fire, easy to hit a target, but needs to put a lot on target (usually).

There is a tradeoff with .50's in terms of convergence as well.  You can get hits and do minor damage out to much longer distances if you use long convergances.  However, to have any success with snapshots and require much less time on target to kill things with .50's, you need to have a closer convergence.  If I set my convergence so all guns converge at 275, I can get good results with snapshots and can kill with a pretty short burst.  On the downside I can't hit squat at outside of about 500 and if I do it doesn't do any damage.

I normally run the closer convergence and set all guns to the same.  In the Jug the snapshots at medium range are critical I find.  With a plane like the Jug sometimes a snapshot is all you get vs. a much better turner, so I set my convergence to make those ones count.

Yeap its true. He was scoring some hits now and then at 1.2 distance and above, and I remember pings up to 1.4 at that distance i decided to do a shallow turn to see if he could hit and he did.
No damage whatsoever tho.

still, I have never been able to hit a target that far with .50, not even with the P-38 before the shaking thing. And let me tell you that the P-38 is the king of long range shots, Ive managed to down enemies as far as 800yards with my trusty P-38L.

We have no film because we were just fooling around, but I'm sure Santa can do it again and film it.

My only explanation is very good gunnery in Santa's part. However, I dont think its a threat since a round at that range wont do any damage; except for buff gunner guns of course.

No more yaddayadda and I'd be even more merrier to have close in fights with planes timed to the battle of britain.
