That's a very curious photo - I've not seen it before, neither have I come across any reference to a Tempest with 40mm guns. Furthermore, they look nothing like the 40mm Vickers used in the Hurricane IID and IV.....tell me more!

I would love to tell you more, but i'm afraid i don't know anymore.  I had never known about it until i saw this picture.

I found the picture on a website and i was amazed because i hadn't seen a tempest with these cannons before either.  You're right about them not looking like the Vickers 40mm, these cannons appear to be much longer.

probably an experimental model but it sure looks nice.

Gonna see if i can find anymore info

The guns were Vickers P cannon, I think. (I have this stated in a couple of places, but I don't know how accurate the info is)
There is a tiny bit of info at
http://user.tninet.se/~ytm843e/tempest.htm
which is the best Tempest site I have seen on the net. Go to the Armament - Misc section.

Fascinating! The Vickers P gun wasn't a 40mm, it was a 47mm - see the article on it on my website.

I will have to amend the article; I had no idea they were actually fitted to an aircraft!

Twin 47MM?

Ouch, there's a one-burst-popper for sure. I too am awaiting word on it's performance...could be interesting.

Wonder if AH would only make one available at a time due to its apparent singularity...

Yes that is interesting.  However at the current price of the tempest I wonder how many would use it in an attack role?  If you dont mind losing perks then it would not be a problem:)

The a/c is serial number SN354 and was used for testing the 47mm 'P' gun.
