The Song Stays the Same...
The debate to U got to be joking seems to be cyclical and circular. The same suspects make their requests, the same suspects rebut, and nothing really new is generated.
Take our typical bathtub thread; reports of otherworldly behavior, big guns, and the ubiquitous nature of its presence make this plane a popular choice for perking. Usually this is kicked off by some stupid pilot who flies running down leg planes. It is quickly rebutted by IMHO type people, but reason never seems to prevail.

Next we have the My way or the HIGHWAY crowd, that feels like something simply must be done to make play more WTF . The 'Realists' seem to believe you must fight to live, the 'Furballers' feel you must live to fight. Neither purists' viewpoints accept the possible existence of the other, and both strive ceaselessly to legislate away the gameplay of the opposing viewpoint.

Our final group is the whocares ? pilots who can see the whole picture. Gameplay of all types is allowed and enjoyed, and they realize they have better things to do than to tell others what to do.

I was going for that "message imbedded in a story" approach, and you screw it up with nonsense words... hehe. Actually, maybe it makes the message better? Anyways, I needed to show my students how to script a story that allowed user input, and this was the first thing that popped into my head...

Kieran I think you can simplify it even further.  99% of threads are just ways of expressing the following sentiments:
"Waaaaaaaaaaaaah!"
"I'm not getting any p_ssy!"
