Of course, I only see what he posts here and what he does in the MA.  I know virtually nothing about the man.  I think its important for people to realize that we don't really know squat about each other.... definately not enough to use words like "hate".

I had 2 black angus calfs, a bull and a cow, that I raised, from bottle-fed cholostrum up through bales up hay and alfalfa and feed until they weighed about 300 lbs each. The idea was to fatten them up and slaughter them for beef. They thought I was their mom.

When the time came to slaughter Blackie and Honey, I couldn't do it. I lost $ on that deal. I gave them to a farmer who put them out to pasture for a tax break. He probably ate them by now, sniff.

Oh look.  Big surprise.  GRUNHERZ thinks that the looneys speak for Liberals again.

Geez GRUN.  Try thinking for yourself for a moment, maybe actually talking to some real Liberals rather that the wackjobs you insist on taking as representatives of Liberals.

I sure as hell don't take the fringe right looneys as the representatives of Conservatives.

FWIW, if they want to eat dogs that's fine by me.  Cats are OK too.  They just shouldn't expect me to partake with them.

Zigrat: Maybe its because he drank wine every day?

Many studies have shown that people with daily alchohol intake (1 or 2 glasses of wine, not enuf to get drunk, but just enuf to get some alchohol into your bloodstream) have significantly reduced cholesterol.

Personally, ony of my relatives, my uncle in law, is so fat he doesnt fit through doors. He's HUGE. And yet he drinks almost a bottle of vodka a day, every day, since he was young. And his "diet" is heavy in meats, fats and all the good stuff.

His cholesterol level is almost ZERO. He may be fat, but he aint dying from a stroke.

Compared to mine, which is almost near the initial danger levels, and im only a few pounds overweight. I dont eat meats (barely once a week), dont eat junk food or sweets , I dont excercise (*shame*)..and I dont drink more than 1 beer every 2 weeks or so in average.

Now im starting to drink a little bit more, and it seems to be helping, my last cholesterol test dropped a few points :)

Alchohol is good for your health, just take 1 glass of wine, beer or whatever to get a lil' bit of it and it works wonders.

GH.......BTW It is my belef that the whole ultra left wing and leftist movement is the same, whacko animal rights people, anarchists, anti-world trade protestors, the seattle terrorists, the anti war of self defense terrorist lapdogs, anti USA, anti democracy, whacko anti western culture racists, and communists/socialists et all are one and the same- all one happy whacko loon family that poses an enormous threat to any decent freedom-loving truly democratic culture.

Our family reunion's are REALLY fun too! But sometimes those anarchists don't talk nice to the communist/socialists because the western culture racists said they brought the wrong potato salad. But later on we all get together and sing Kumbaya while we barbeque another pile of greens and chow.

I'll invite you to the next get-together Grun.

Good discussion, but not enough flaming yet :)

Vegetarians are the real weirdos here. Meat is good...early man subsisted almost totally on meat. Supposedly over 80% of Cro-Magnons diet was meat. Nothing is finer than a big hunk of cow on the grill on a summer evening.

The fact that they eat dogs doesn't bother me as much as the way they kill them. Many of the dogs are beaten to death so they are more tender when cooked.

I think you're right Zigrat. You can run 30 miles a day and eat birdseed, but when your DNA says it's time for a heart-attack, start dialing 911.

Actually, what you should be eating is venison, elk meat and buffalo meat.  They are equal in protien and lower in fat than cow or pork.

It's one of the things that must be taken into account when talking about what the cavemen ate.  How did they eat so much meat and not all die of heart attacks (and yes, life was much more...shall we say interesting back then)?  Because the meat they were eating was actually healthier than what we find in the stores today.

For comparison:  (based on 3.5 ounces of each)
Meat: Fat - Saturated Fat - Calories - Protein

Elk: 1.9g 0.7g 146 30.2

Antelope: 2.7g 1.0g 150 29.4

Deer (Venison): 3.2g 1.2g 158 30.2

Lean Roast Beef: 14.3g 5.7g 239 27.0

Ham (lean only): 5.8g 1.9g 153 24.8

Salmon: 5.8g 1.4g 163 24.5

Chicken Breast (roasted, no skin): 3.5g 1.1g 163 31.5

It's genetic.  my maternal grandmother made it to 88 growing up on country food (lots of fat!)  My paternal great-grandmother lived longer than that (I think she was 94 when she died) and her mother made it over 100 I think.   All growing up in Virginia eating country ham, red-eye gravy, biscuits and eggs for breakfast.  ;)  oh, and the fried apples...  yum!!!

That's because of the way domestic food animals are fed and bred. They are fed a lot of high-energy foods, such as corn, that wild animals never eat. This is done to increase weight gain (the animal is sold by weight) and improve the "quality" of the meat. Quality grading is based on the amount of marbling (fat deposited within the meat). For example, US Prime (as in prime rib) denotes the highest degree of marbling. Higher quality grading brings a higher price.

Genetic factors are also important and domestic cattle and hogs have been selectively bred for generations for rapid weight gain and a high degree of marbling, that is, more fat.

You can't really fault the producer, they are just responding to the market.

By the way, trimming the excess fat around a cut of meat helps, but doesn't remove the fat within the meat (marbling).

that's because the fat marbling makes it taste better.   mmm, fat marbled ribeye....

oh, to the original point of the post.  Let 'em eat what animals they want.  I'm not giving up my cow meat to appease those who find cows sacred, so the Koreans shouldn't give up dogs because other countries find dogs cute and cuddly.

As an aside, buffalo marketers are now having to change some claims.

Many producers are "finishing" their buffalo on corn and other grains in feedlots. Guess what? The fat content and cholesterol are going up.

However, you get your buffalo to market quicker, so it's possible to theoretically make more money.

There is discussion about the problem in the industry right now.

Exactly. I can be eating like a lumberjack and not gain a grain. Same for my mother and sister.
