Film Editing Please?
« on: January 17, 2002, 10:31:09 AM »
Could we please get a means to edit film?  I was hoping that I could film once inside the actual film and use that a means of chopping off the end when I forgot to turn it off, but alas, I could not.

You see, I have this film of me in WW that i want to post for the viewing public to see.  It shows darkstar and I in a fight ... and I just want to know if the end result is strictly lag related or what.  We were in a rolling scissor of sorts, and well, when he shot me down, I really thought it was odd because I didnt think he had a shot.  I commented to a squaddie about how surprised I was ... and then went and watched the film.  From the film, his plane passes well below mine when he fires.  Hell the sounds from the gun dont occur until he is well below me, and there is just no way on my FE that he could have hit me.  The problem is later on the film there was some chatter I would just prefer not to post.  Some if it had to do with Skernk's sexual orientation (a big surprise to some of you I bet) and the rest had to do pretty much with hblairs STDs (no surprise here I bet).  So, I wish there was a way I could crop off the end of the film when I am in the tower and just forget to stop running.

What say you?  Both about the film editing option and the lag question?

Thanks!
Nim

Hitech (or rather Ronni) are purported to be working on a whole new film system; so...

A) wait two weeks more

And

B) Start posting on what you'd like to see in the new system.

Where did you here that they are working on a new film system?

I would love new film system that would

1. Show what the pilot saw when the film was made.

Some things I filmed I thought would look awesome in playback, but with all the stuff that gets missed, they just look dumb in playback.

2. Ability to edit the play length or select a segment of film to save as a new film.

Some films are just WAY to long to send off to everyone for viewing, when all you want to show them is a 2 minute segment 30 minutes into the flight.

3. Ability to edit the viem so the viewer has a directed camera view.

Some films have certain things to look for that a viewer might not see if he doesn't look where you need him to look as he watches the film. Would be nice to be able to make the film playback more like a movie.

4. Ability to add text into the text buffer as the film plays out.

On films I make specifically for training, I type text into the buffer during recording so that the viewer can read it while the film plays back. Would love to add comentary into combat films, but too hard to type play-by-play when fighting 5 N1Ks.

5. Add a free camera view that you can un-lock from the vehicle and move to where you want it

I have many films that could make cool screen shots and fly-bys if I could put the camera where I wanted to.

There's probably some more things that would be nice to add, but I think those are my top 5.

Possibility to jump to another (i.e. opponent) plane. It would be nice to see filmed situation from another POV.

Or even better....

Offline, allow a user to jump into a film live and use the filmed bandits as target drones.

Some ace pulled an incredible move on you that you can beat?  Play it back and try different counter moves until you find a solution.

It'd be much a better way of getting some realistic target practice instead of  of sniping the current drones strolling around in a racetrack pattern.

do it like il2 where you can record the views in the film too. that really would be very useful imo. you could see how the person tracks a bandit, and get a much better insight to what he/she was thinking during the engagement. of course you could turn this off and look with your own hat as well.

I would also add to the list - making nose art visible in playback, it's probably the only time you'd have a chance to really enjoy its affect...

Plus...

a time indicator will be REAAAALLY nice.

It gets quite a bit tiring when you have to explain to people "well, about at the middle of the film....".. "look what happens just before the film ends.. no no no, not that, the one before...".. "well, at the third merge, the one before where I did this and did that and..." ..  etc etc

I want it to be just

 "look at 3:45 part"

 "look what happens at 2:39 - 3:17"

 Time indicators please!

This always seems like a good idea until your realize that the aces aren't drones in real life, and they adjust their tactics to counter any counter moves that you try.  :)

Still, always a good thing to include in the film.  Didn't AW have something like this?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it did.  Like way back in '91-'92 so surely its doable in AH.

And no, just because you can whoop up on Drex-Drone offline doesn't automatically mean you can make him your squeak on line. :D   But it couldn't hurt.

I'd love to be able to film some maneuvers for the drones to fly to target practice agianst.

I'd love to be able to target practice on a drone doing a series of rolling-scissors.  Or even in a 2-3 G turn.  Or flat scissors.

Its really powerful if you have the ability to merge (or layer) films.

example:

  -  I film  myself flying a buff in a nice straight line.
  -  Then I film my self in a fighter making attack runs on it.
  -  Repeat the above for a couple of over fighters from different directions.
  -  Then I jump back in the bomber live and practice my defensive gunnery on the attaking drone fighters.

Or be able to practice in a ostwind at some zig-zaging, turning bandits over my head.

These training films could be shared between other players.

You get the idea.

Wouldn't that like create a rip in the space/time continuum? ;)

Uhhh not if the main deflector dish is aligned to emit a Tacyon beam synchronized with the Time/Space phase shift.    Duh!

I think you've got a great idea Wabb. Now that my mind is eased about the possibility of accidentally killing my own great great grandfather, hope something like that can be implemented.

My understanding is that what you capture is a stream of data which when played back through the AH interface you can use to see what happened.  It's very well done by my opinion and if used diligently will pretty much show you where you screwed up.  However, it is surely missing a couple of goodies such as the tracers so we know where we aimed and where we hit.  Having this might help some of us who just haven't figured out how to calculate for lag etc.

One nice but undoubtedly resource intensive feature would be a way to convert what you see on the screen into an .avi or windows media file.  Then with a simple DV editing suite you could make your own Pearl Harbor or Battle of Brittain.

I've done the following with nice results.  Capture screen to my DV Camcorder then run the resulting .avi on the TV the one drawback being that the screen resolution must be set to 640 x 480 or it looks kinda skewed.  What I'm waiting to get the time to do is to capture various shots from various angles of spits attacking JU88s or LH attacking B17s and then put the whole shebang together with Adobe Premiere into an Oscar winning war epic with thunderous music and special effects including closeups of the evil Bish or Nits ugly grinning faces as they pump lead into the Beeg hero.  Maybe even better their evil suprised and terrified faces as I pump lead into them.
