Whine of the week, by ME – teamwork
« on: January 17, 2002, 06:52:23 PM »
I feel that my whines fall into a different class than those analysed by –rude- :D Well, at least I’m going to try to be constructive in this one.

It concerns teamwork. You know, it’s very hard for new guys to break into Aces High gameplay successfully. Even for guys like me with a few years experience on the Dark Side. There, I could look at the map and know what to fly from where. I could look down the list and find a few guys I could trust, and off we’d go. I did quite well sometimes.

Here, it’s a different kettle of fish – and not just for me. I have seen whines from other guys on other boards who feel that they’re being ignored and left out in AH. When I joined WB in 1998, guys like –farm- and –save- fell over themselves to help me. Everyone did. Here, I have noticed requests for information being met with rebuttals such as “shaddup”, or “go away” or “try hitting Alt+F4”, or simply ignored. Even having identified a bunch of guys to tag along with, unless you’re in their little clique, some of them wont lift a finger to help you, never mind clear your 6 or give a 6 call. Today, I shot down a Spit. I was recovering from the dive and immediately got jumped by a NIK. No-one came to my aid, and no-one gave a 6-call even though there was not one, not two, not even three, but about SEVEN friendlies within icon range.

A little later, I was in a F6F hard on the heels of a P47 that I had dived on. Part of my elevator had been busted off earlier, so I didn’t have full manoeuvrability, and it was going to take me a while to finish the job. At 400 yards behind the P47, which I already had smoking, some buffoon in a Spit dives into the gap between us!! Not only was this an attempt to steal my kill (no big deal), but it forced a killshooter death of me. I was rather miffed about that.

Come on, guys. Aces High has a wealth of strategy. It certainly wasn’t designed as a game for lone wolfing. It’s a TEAM game. We have to help eachother, and all the new handles we see on a daily basis. Right now, I find myself not knowing where to start, or what to fly. I’ll turn up with bombs at a target only to find the job already done. I ask questions in the text buffer, but these are often unanswered. I can only imagine that other guys have the same difficulties.

My k/d ratio right now is sucking wind as a result of many, many needless deaths – avoidable deaths, were I to be working as part of a team. At the risk of blowing my own trumpet, I attach a couple of scoresheets from Warbirds, with some explanatory notes. The only reason for doing this is to demonstrate that I’m not entirely useless as a fighter jock, given the right support and situation.

Perhaps we should have a newbies arena, with some experienced veterans helping and answering questions. I would be willing to help, but I’m too much of a newbie myself.

Aces High is a great game. Let’s make a great game even better!

Good post beet1e/SCRMBL. Whats your online Id anyway?

I always help out by distracting or diving on a bogy that's on the tail of an ally. I often ask if someone lower and is "clear" in case I cannot see a bogy on the deck chasing them and I offer check 6's whenever possible.
And this was a common occurance with a LOT of people in the arena.  We have an a very large influx of people that haven't settled in yet. Hopefully things will become psudo normal somewhat and couresty and cooperation will be more common place.

I agree with 100% of your post. for having the posting it. Wasn't a whine at all in my eyes :)

I know what yah meen beetle... I was up the other night trying to help capture a field, me and my wingie fought all the way in mossies NOE to the target field, which was covered with gleefully vuclhing friendlies only to find the city and city acks all still up...

Well, I went to work on the acks then started takin down the buildings when suddenly I hear my wingie hollerin "JUG ON US!!"... I jinked and snapped the views around, and roarin up our tulips was a p47, blazing away at my wingie.. I pulled up sharply and there was 6 frindlies chasin this guy, lead by a F4F with no elevator, all of 'em blazing away at the jug, which; tho still smokin was doin a pretty good job of tearin away at my wingie.

Amazed that in all those friendlies, not even one gave us a six call, you know; some kinda warnin at least.. and what with my wingie and i involved with actually doing something, it was really a suprise since we expected SOME cover while we were doin in the place for 'em..

Anyway, I pulled up over the parade, dropped back down on the jug and sliced his tail off with a short burst of  20mm and went back to choppin away at the city. And yah know; not even the guy in the f4f managed to say thanks for fininshing the jug off.

So, as yah can see; I  know what yah mean.. teamwork is precious hard to find..

For a lot of us... A game is all about fun.   If we wanted teamwork and organization we woulda stayed at work and been making the overtime or furthering our carrers.

hang... do we have f4f's now?

I firmly believe that teamwork in AH primarily consists of surrounding yourself by alot of newbies to "absorb" hits and give you an opportunity at preoccupied targets.

I know the feeling.

I don't want to ovesimplify the predicament, but what I've found is your going to have your team players, and then you've got your solo's who could care less about you, your ass, your mission, or their country. It's their style and it's their $14.95.

Get to know the names of the team players. Work with them. If your not already in a squad, get one. TOD is pure team play, as well. I had the same complaints you have when I first got into AH. Nothing has changed, nor do I see it changing anytime soon. All I can say, is don't let it discourage you.

THe one thing I can say that is encouraging is the increase in Missions being used of late.
If you're a knight and need a wingie, or a goon, or a bombrun, gimme a yell.

Well we do have a newbie arena beetle..it's called the training arena. However the abuses of the arena seem to quite quickly discourage the new folks from using it much. It is sad that a Junior High mentality seems to prevail in the arenas and here as well.

There are many people out there who still believe in teamwork, friendliness and common courtesy...plz keep looking, you'll find em:)

whups.. sorry lazs..  i wuz dreaming about one them blue things wot looks like a keg wit a wing shoved thru it in my hypothetical description of a purely imaginary encounter between a couple of strat minded pilots trying to get some tactical objectives in an arena dominated by mindlessly furballing newcommers.

FWIW, anybody who wants some assistance or would like to fly wing with us strat/tac types is more then welcome to tag along anytime.

Good luck beetle.. lemme know if i can be of assistance. :)

Good post....allow me to clear this up for yas.

Teamwork, will at best, exist sporadically and will never be predominantly community wide...it would be nice, but not very realistic to expect such cooperation.

Regarding giving six calls, well, the example Hang gave, I would have a serious problem with someone using me as bait and not giving a six call as a fellow countrymate. Thus my desire to return to the days of PNG in relation to friendly fire. I, along with my friends and squadmates, would make this guys life a living....sorry, I got carried away.

Give it some time....there are great folks in this community who will help you and fight with you. Hangtime, Hblair, Ammo, Zigrat, Catseye, Fester, Kappa, any of the 13thTAS guys as well as most squads in the arena will be glad to help, as well as a whole boat load of others who I did not mention.

Personally, I don't do anything in my aircraft that puts me in a position where I would have to depend on fellow countrymen to bail me out. Sadly, this is not exclusive to Aces High, rather it has been common over the past 11 years and three sims which I have been a part of. On the upside, the longer you fly, you will begin to notice that what you spoke of today will still exist, but not so much involve you.

I try and live by this premise...you reap what you sow. Ignore those who are selfish and treat everyone as you would like to be treated...offer help...give sixcalls and yell at me while online if you ever need any help:)

Cyas Up or in my sights!

Beetle:
This seems to occur for many in just about any of the three countries. Indeed, I have had it happen to me too. I don't care for the lack of teamwork nor the kill stealing. It comes from dweebs, and I try to avoid flying anywhere they are.
What I have done is to say sumthing soon after it happens. If the guy is worth anything, he will acknowledge and apologize; hey watermelon happens.

I have learned not to expect check 6 calls, nobody really cares about you except those who are a class or are  squadmates.
Also, there is a danger here too, to blame poor peformance on others in your vicinity; that can happen due to frustration. When it does, you can miss out on learning about the mistake you made by blaming others.
You will come to learn who you can depend upon and who you can't. Joy will come when you see one of those dweebs in trouble and, you simply circle them and watch as they get their butts shot off. They will know you are there, and that you watching and not going to help them. If they call you on it, you will have your oppty to let them and the entire country know why.   Revenge is at times, soooo sweet! :D

Yeah, the ole Conga Line effect, hard at work. :(
I hate it when I see it, and when I am a victim to it. And you never know when its about to happen either.
The type you described are the type I referred to in my post above. I try to remember who they are and ignore them whenever I can.
