Come play in the Snow: `Stalingrad` setup in Combat Theater.
« on: January 18, 2002, 05:47:41 PM »
S!

New setup in CT.  It uses the revised Stalingrad Terrain. This terrain has winter tiles and has never been used in the main arenas.  Enter the arena to load it. The version on the HTC `Downloads` page may not be the correct version.  The atmosphere is typical Russian winter, with dark clouds and snow.

This is the aircraft lineup:

Axis

German

109F4
109G2
109G6 (2 point perk)
190A5
Ju88
C-47 (limited bases)

Italian

MC202

GV`s

MkIV
M8 (subbing for German armoured car)
M3 (subbing for German halftrack)
Ostwind

Soviet:

Yak9T
La5FN (1 point perk)
IL-2
B-26 (2 point perk)
C-47 (limited bases)

Lendlease

Hurricane IIC
Hurricane IID

GV`s

Mk IV (subbing for T-34)
M8 (subbing for Soviet light tank)
M3
M16

The situation is February 1943 just after the capture of the German 6th Army at Stalingrad.  The Soviet`s are continuing their Winter Counteroffensive.

Each side has defined objectives which they must capture.   The Soviets want to capture Rostov and drive West.  The Germans want to re-capture Stalingrad.  Victory will be determined by a CT Staff member every night at 12 midnight EST. If a side has achieved their victory conditions, then a victory will be declared and the Arena will be reset.

Base capture will most often require the use of M3`s. There are outlying spawn points on most of the fields which allow quick movement to neighbouring fields and Vehicle bases.  Tank raids are very much a threat with this terrain.  C-47`s will be restricted in the fields they may fly from. We are trying to simulate the fact most of the terrain capture in this scenario was by ground forces.

Both sides also have PT Boats on the rivers.

What came first, the chicken or the egg? I have no idea.

Sounds like a cool terrain, but to have fun I still need some bogies to shoot at. Hopefully numbers will pick up in there someday.

My stone aged system can't handle that terrain  :(

Too bad, it looks like a fun time.

Big fps hit around depots but I abbreviated the horizon in those "busy" spots. That works ok for me.

Stunning terrain. I flew an Il2 for a couple of saorties against Ygmilo and Beez in thier Panzers. Made me feel like I was nailing armour in the battle of Kursk in '43 :)   20 plus folks in there and no lack of fun.

... The Panzers rolling in through the snowy steppes. Shelling the factories and the depot. Our Sturmovichs with thier Yak escort fly through the few ground level clouds with a dogged and determined purpose - to hit the invaders and wipe them out. All the while the gray overcast glares down at us and hided from view the gaggles of 109s and 190's up above whoe are rushing to defend thier comrades on the ground.

Was only an hours worth of flyig in there when I had to log off. Was not easy to do as it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and not like any I've had in AW or AH to date. It's NOT WW2. Don't want it to be. But it feels like I'm participating in WW2 era type combat and it's nice :D

Defended Mother Russia for a bit. Like the terrain a lot. Almost made me turn up the heat in the house it looks so cold. Well done setting up the terrain and theater.:)

This looks like a great setup in the CT.  Too bad the connections in CT stink.  Hopefully it gets fixed soon.  AH in TCP mode is too warpy for me.

10bears it is an exciting arena and terrain to fly  in. We had 50 folks peak, 40 average most of the night after I wrote that first pots.

The only real problem, as Sancho noted, was that the connects were not to good for many people. I also had the "switching to TCP" message quite a bit too but it did not seem to effect my gameplay.

And over the rivers (water by A48) people would get a constant stream of "object not found" or somethign like that. As if there was a missing graphics file my FE could not load.

I loved flying ground attack against the depots (look like towns/large villages)and armour as well performing as a fighter cap. And one extra boon is cat & mouse dog fights in and out of the clouds is back!  :)  Even though being IN the clouds still has that bug where you can see enemy cons one can still use the transition layers to evade an attack and recover the offensive against bogies.

I flew yesterday night both for russian and germans and had great fun! The atmosphere is something really NEW to AH and adds a  lot to the gameplay: short icons range and presence of low clouds and fog require TRUE SA!!!
I had also some good 1 vs 1 and 2 vs 2 dogfight: something almost impossible in the overcrowded MA.
The planeset is well balanced, the challenge is fair.
Great work CT guys, you're giving new life to beloved AH.:)

I got an idea... How about the TOD guys all show up in the CT at 11 eastern and all join one side.   The 6 guys they were fighting would be fairly easy to beat and the TOD guys wouldn't be taking toooo many chances.

I think that's a great idea.

And after? Well everyone can laugh, pat each other on the back while saying how much fun it was then put our brains back on the shelves and retire to the perpetual demolishion derby in the MA :)

Just be sure to post the date and time!

Ah thx westly this means alot. The good news is it's NOT the barge traffic on the rivers that is causing the "missing shapes" message.  That's great because a couple of bases along the river use barges for supply.  They look really cool too. Took all those routes out thinking barges wern't ready for primetime. (they have tug boats too)

The bad news is I have no idea whats causing that bug.. I'll do  a complete search for any void objects.. see if anything is assigned wrong.

A48 was placed as an afterthought. Felt V9 area security needed beefing up..

Well glad this map is getting a work out.. fix any problems now before an event.

But still your comment above I've made as wallpaper :)

Ok, I still host the CT, so if you are having troubles there, I can do something about it, but I need information.

Please post me a traceroute to rt2.applink.net or to rt1.applink.net in the Internet forums if you are having troubles with the CT, as I cannot find a thing that would cause any problems on this side of the fence.

Jumped into CT for a quick hop. It was great! I flew an Il-2 and got in an intense fight with a 109, which lasted about  five minutes. I took a lot of damage and was able to limp home.
Once I got to A48 with a dead gunner, and shot up plane, the base was socked in with fog. By the time I made a couple of passes the south end had cleared enough to land. WTG guys outstanding job! The only problem I encountered was when i was over the dock areas around A48 I got 10 missing shape messeges. Small price to pay for such a cool experiance. I'll be flying there some more. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

Everytime I goto the CA the Germans have one field, no planes are avaiable and I get the message "Not reveiving updates, switching to TCP.
I mean, I'd like to play but something seems to be 'porked'
