What happened to SNAP SHOTS?
« on: January 20, 2002, 06:41:19 AM »
Okay, i've been out of action for 6 months, and i thoroughly enjoyed flying in the SNAP SHOTS when they were flown, but looking at the EVENTS calender, it doesn't list any, but it still describes them, do we just not do them anymore? or did something new take thier place? thanks, and Cya's up when i get settled back in here at home!

Good to see you back! :)

They are on the back burner for now. Most of our time goes into the TOD's. I can see bringing them back between the TOD's but need to clean them up, update several for the new terrains.

Personally, I'd love to see a weekly, weeknight
check-six, (or snapshot) event started.  Maybe
not quite as late in the evening as the WW events
are.

You won't see a Check-six event anymore, because that's pretty much what the Combat Theater is.

For those that don't remember or weren't here, a Check 6 event was Axis vs Allied, restricted to one theater, a set of objectives for each side was given, and the participants had about 2-3 hours to do it how they saw fit.  The existing Combat Theater implements this based on a 24/7 basis.  If this is the kind of "event" you're looking for, I suggest going to the CT forum and posting your desire for an "event" there.  If the CT staff can set up a certain day and time (e.g. Sundays at 1800GMT, 1pm ET) where they will reset the arena and keep score for a few hours, it'll just be like the Check 6 events of old.   The only difference is that sometimes a Check 6 was a limited life event, you could only re-up during certain time windows.  Examples of Check 6 events were "allies must capture 3 bases in the philippines" or "Axis must recapture several bases in North Africa"

Snapshots create an individual mission (or recreate an actual mission).  The objectives are very specific, and "orders" are given by the Snapshot description.  The events are almost always 1 life.  Past Snapshots are Memphis Belle, Torpedo 8, Milkrun...

Bummer :(

Personally, I think something like AW's Warnights
would be the best kind of non-registered event
possible.  And that's what I thought Check-sixes
were sorta like.

I don't think the CT is a viable alternative,
unless, like you say, the CT staff decides to
do some kind of 'event' there.

Flying around in a sparcely populated arena with
no real objective just doesn't do it for me. (as
opposed to flying in a sparcely populated arena
*with* an objective, like a check six :) )

I agree for the most part.   Was just telling you what I was told when I asked about Check 6 events several months ago.

However, the Combat Theater does have a basic objective for each side.  The CT staff checks for the victory conditions at a specific time each evening.

Still, I think setting aside a 2-3 hour block where the CT staff monitors things a little more closely would generate a little more interest.  I could be dead wrong tho.

I was just looking at the CT, and yeah, I guess
it does.  But it sure doesn't seem that way when
flying in there.

It would sure get more interest from me!  As it
is, I don't see the CT as anything but another
MA with a limited planeset and very few
participants.

Yeah, know what you mean, anRky.... I used to like the AW Warnights very much, they were a lot of fun.  I used to like the way we had limited lives which automatically regenerated after a certain time, meaning players like me could usually last the full 2 hours without being "dead" for too long.   :) I used to like the way dead pilots could go as gunners while they waited for their next life to regenerate too.  Unfortunately, it is not possible to replicate this here due to the different ways they are set up, but I do think a weekly walk-on event of this sort would prove very popular....  Though, as Nifty says, there is always the CT...  :)

Got a Fictitous Carrier theme in mind.

I would much rather see Snapshots than  "Wild Wednesdays".  My vote.

I could see us having a Ss on a week night every week. Just need to get several of our newer CM's up to speed. The Ss died on the vine because we had an ugly string of "no shows" for about 4 months. Players just stopped showing up to fly because CM's would forget to host. I don't have that problem with the current group.

I had thought about dropping WW for a Snapshot event, but WW's are a different type of event that does have a following.

In time I would look for the Ss on a different week night. We shall see, we shall see. ;)

Sounds good daddog, I get a sense there are a LOT of AH players that are mainly into "WW2" stuff, just as there were/are in AW and Warbirds.  Its the best type of play IMHO. I sure enjoyed the Snapshot on saturday. Regards.

I understand squire.

When the Mongrels moved over from Warbirds a couple of years ago there were not "any" historical events. I started the Snapshots just to get the ball rolling. Then "verm", "kieren" and others started the Jokers Low/CM Corps. I asked to join and not log after that pyro gave us tools and blessings to start making our events. We have had steady progress, but there are months were it seems two steps forward and one step back. :)

Snapshots are good events for the community who does not want to or can't commit to a weekly event.
