Thoughts on the Ki-61

Well first off it will look beautiful, second how many will actually fly it after a couple weeks?  Granted I think the 202 and 205 are gorgeous but I don't fly them that much.  Main reason?  They are not competitive with the late war planes we have flying out there now.  What we are getting is not a screamer, nor is it a good climber, and it isn't even that good of a turner.  And if they add the 151/20 on there it really will be lacking in the hitting department.

So we ask ourselves is the 61 really what we want?  Maybe for historical purposes it is being added, I dunno but I think if any JP would have been added it should have been the KI-84 series or the Jack.  This is by no means a flame just my thoughts.  Once the newness has worn off it won't be flown much, but we won't know that until it is out

I would expect people will be flying the Ki-61 for the same reasons peoply fly the 205, spit 5 and 109 g2. Some people have connections to these planes, some people have always loved these planes, or some people just find it fun as hell to take an underdog up and kick some uber chog bellybutton  .

I would have much rather have seen the KI-84 also. However if you look back through the posts you will see a lot of people asked for KI-61. I'm just glad to see some Japanese planes are finely being built.

Not saying I won't fly it, I think in the future of whats ahead.  I do really appreciate that they add a lot of things, but this one just didn't seem right to me with the current trend towards late war planes.

Gee...

Maybe the trend is towards earlier planes now? Because it has to happen sometime?

No, that couldn't possibly be it. Sorry I mentioned it.

I would take on any 190 or 109 in the 205.  I love that bird, I just wish she had a drop tank!

If it's unpopular I'm going to fly it and I know there are other people out there like me.

Cut n Pasted from another thread:
Don't even have the planes yet and already people are whining about how they are under-used and a worthless investment.

I agree with Sturm, it is a cool plane no doubt, historically important, and a dangerous adversary for any mid war scenario, but it will kind of suck in the late war MA setting we have, do to the reasons Sturm stated, not  a good turner, not fast and , if they add the MG 151/20 option than it will be under gunned compared to the HO 5 model.
Just kind of curious why they added this plane now for Japan when they could of added the Ki 100 or the Ki 84, the jack or even the ki 44, would of given the Japanese a better more usable addation to the MA.
The Tony modeled is beautiful, though, and I do look forward to trying it, and I am happy they are finally adding another Japanese plane.

The Ki-61-I-KAIc shown in the screenshots should have 2 Ho-5 20 mm sychronized cannons in the upper fuselage (120 rounds per gun), not the LW 151/20s.

One of the reasons it may have been added (a guess on my part, but an educated one) is that some weeks back Pyro asked the CM-squad for a list of planes they'd like to see soon for scenario purposes.  I don't remember the exact contents of that list, but I believe the KI-61 was on it.  The KI was a dominent figure in the South Pacific from mid-'43 on.  While a maintenance nightmare for the JAAF, it was a rude surprise to the Allies when it flew (and was flown correctly).  The only land-based plane the Allied had in any numbers in the Solomons or New Guinea that came close in performance was the P-38.  The Navy's F6F could give it a hard time, but remember that in '43 the US was down to one carrier for the better part of the year.

My own nomination to the list was the P-40N, which I would fly without hesitation in the MA.  As a furballer, it would do nicely, and it was an incredibly stable gun platform.  The Razor-back P-47 was also requested as a plane for the 1943 scenario genre.  It was the mainstay for the USAAF's 8th AF units until the P-51 came along.  Both these new A/C will see some following in the MA, I think.  When WB added the KI-61 for their New Guinea 1943 scenario, I took it up regularly in the WB MA.  I did quite well with it.

If you never add anything except 1945 superplanes I guess nothing will ever change will it? I think the Ki-61 is a fine choice, about time too.

people forget or dont know that the ki61 we are getting was basicly  a 109, made by japan, with slight changes.  hehe it should preform about like a g2 or g6 maybe a g6/g10 cross. Ki84 will be a nitemare in MA when it arrives. u think the niki is bad, Ki84 is even worse.
