P-38 with shot out wingtip and 1 rudder, aligned with runway (which had a very steep cliff in front of the end of said runway...so it was a "break fast or slam" situation).
Plane touches down near mid-runway, can't use flaps to slow down due to the missing wingtip (flap wouldve spun my plane out of control at slow speed) at roughly 200mph... those useless wheel breaks on the 38 didnt do zilch... impossible to rudder to slow down (1 rudder missing)..
As I contemplated my future as a splat on the mountainside at the end of the runway, I decided to at least go out trying. Pulled hard up a few moments before hitting the mountain, plane went from 130mph to 60 mph on the mountain side-scraping climb.. and the wheels TOUCHED the mountain.. I taxiid UPWARDS for a second, speed went to 0. Then the 38 began to taxi in reverse... rolling downhill back to the field.
Since it was a steep hill, the moment the tail booms touched the ground at the base of the hill, the plane flipped on itself..and in the highest tradition of the P-38, flipped and flopped 3 or 4 more times... towards the runway. I ended up with the cockpit piece and what was left of the wing roots sitting in rwy near the rearm pad.
Kids, try this at home.
