Win98 to Win2000 system?
« Reply #1 on: January 25, 2002, 04:38:33 PM »
I just installed WinME next to my W2k.
I had some problems with WinXP so I formatted C-drive and installed WinME in C: instead.
Couldn't get W2k (in D:) work other way that re-installing it thought I didn't had to re-install any proggies again (didn't format disk).

Anyway if all your disks are using NTFS forget 98/se/me...

Search words "boot.ini" and "modifying" from Google; I did that and found lots of helpfull sites.
I'm not sure if just modifying that boot.ini-file would help but you can always try... Here's mine: One HD partitioned in 4 smaller pieces where C: has WinME and D: contains Win2000 Pro.

Here's my boot.ini:

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows 98 ME

Thanks staga.
I just read from somewhere that it is possible to convert NTFS to FAT32 with Partition Magic without losing any data. Do you know if there is performance differences between NTFS & FAT32, or is it just security that differs these too? How about if some application crashes? Is possibility to loose your data higher in FAT32 than in NTFS?
Lots of interesting sites with your advices. Going to browse until I found a solution to this.

Ok, it seems to be really hard and there's great risk of messing up my HD. But if I start to look this problem from the other end;

Someone here stated that Windows 2000 don't allow direct access to keyboard by any software?. Is there a way to pass this blocking with some software or tweaking? CH-Throttle dos programming software will run in dos windows, but it can't access the keyboard.
Thanks!

Vector, I don't think you can go to a FAT or FAT32 file system from NTFS in Win2k.  Once you set up NTFS, thats it, unless you format and re-install.

Vector - no, there's no work around keyboard  access:( That's why people who are using high end CH gear are setting up dual boot systems - 98SE or 98Lite takes minimum of space and all your stick features work...

p.s. Why would anyone want to convert NTFS into FATs?

Thanks for your replies.
Lynx, I should convert NTFS to FAT32 in order to install Win98 after win2k. Win98 won't install to NTFS? I've searched this subject from the net and had some hints that win98 can be installed after win2k, but requires some additional work. I don't want to uninstall my win2k.

NT 4.0/Win2k/WinXP do not allow hardware access through the dos window (using .vxd files).  You simply open the door for conflicts when you allow it.. and since they try to push stability with those OSs, its probably a wise decision.

You do have other options.  The CH forums would be a great place to start.  I know that TM refused to support NT 4.0 (and 2k..) as long as I can remember.  They are finally moving away from DOS based programming and accepting that it needs to be done under the Windows environment.

In the case of TM... several customers have helped them along in this endeavor.  I can't imagine that CH wouldn't have the same representation amongst their customer base.
