Firewall problem
« on: January 30, 2002, 08:36:30 AM »
I've had no problems getting AH to operate with Zone Alarm prior the recent update - now it just locks up.

Uninstalled and reinstalled both AH and Zone Alarm - no go.

I have now have a choice no play or no firewall - not a good choice.  Any ideas?
I get really really tired of selective realism disguised as a desire to make bombers easier to kill.

If you got the free ZA.
Tempararly set security levels down as low as they will go.
Go into ah online.
Come out AH should now be on prog list & reset security back to your default. Set allow connect on Ah etc as before so you dont get the message.
If you got the pro ZA just press Y when the game sticks then go back out & reset settings etc.
Every time theres an update you will have to do this:)
Hope it helps.

You need to flag AH as "Changes Frequently" in ZA...

Open the ZA control panel, select "Programs" then find
AH in the list.

Right-click on the AH entry and check the "Changes Frequently"
box.

This assumes you have at least Version 2.6.88 of ZA ( free version )

I had an earlier version that didn't have this feature and that
caused me all sorts of headaches when AH changed.

If AH isn't IN the programs list you'll need to get it there by
launching it and when it is apparently "hung", blindly
type "y" and "r"  for "yes" amd "remember"...

Once AH launches then do the check-box thing...

I've got the free ZoneAlarm version and it says 2.6.362 is the updated versiojn. Am i missing something? I've never seen the 'Changes Frequently' option, but then again my eyesight isnt the greatest. I do not like the 'hangs' I gt with new versions and will try the blind 'y' and 'r'. Sure better than rebooting and scanning. Thanks fer that info.

I used to run ZA free version and even with the newest version I didn't have the changes frequently option. The blind y and r never worked either. I changed to Sygate Personal Firewall and that solved my problems as it minimizes programs so you can see the permision screen.

Hum, maybe they removed that option.  I know the previous
version that I had of ZA ( don't remember the ver. no. )
didn't have the "changes frequently" option so I downloaded
and installed 2.6.88 after I saw references to that option
 here in the AH boards.

To see that option you do have to RIGHT-CLICK on the
Aces High entry in the "Programs" list...you should see
a small drop-down menu appear that contains lines
Local Network, Internet, Pass Lock, Changes Frequently
 and Remove Aces High options.

The download executable for that version is:

     zonalm26.exe

You might search around to see if it's out there on
 someones site.

The option for "changes frequently" is not in the latest version.  I have 2.6.362.  In older versions of ZA, it had the option.

I've had this same problem.  Here is the work-around:

Right click the AH icon on the desktop and select properties.

Click the shortcut tab.

In the Run pull-down, select run minimized.

OK out of the dialog.

Run AH.

This will give the Zone Alarm boxes a chance to get on top of AH.

It may take you a few restart cycles to get it to go (workaround isn't perfect) but it will work eventually!

Once you get it, go back into the shortcut properties and reset the Run selection to Normal Window.

Good luck...

I have had the same problem in the past Dantoo.  It is to do with the True Vector register which records what program / version is allowed to use the connection.  Unfortunately if you delete ZoneAlarm the old register is still kept so when you reinstall it uses the old permissions - however the progam window will not necesarily show it.  The answer was to delete the file and reboot the PC then reset all the permissions before starting the program.  I can't remember the file name but I'll look back through my e-mail to see if I can find it.  If you e-mail Zonelabs they will tell you what to do.

As far as updates to Ah goes as soon as I see a patch I download it manually from the website and install it manually.  Then I delete AH from ZoneAlarm and reboot the PC.  Then I add AH back in to ZoneAlarm (right click in program window and add program then select Aceshigh.exe) which registers the new version and reboot again to make sure.  Since I've done this I've had no problems.  I do have the "changes regularly" option in ZoneAlarm Pro but prefer not to use it.

Hope that helps
