I think that this is the spirit of volunteerism that our president was talking about.

Ah.. Texas... the wonderfull home of such great quotes:
  • "Of course shooting is safe.  Hell.. I've been doing it for 20 years and I've only been hit twice."
  • "If 12 year olds aren't allowed to carry guns... how are they supposed to learn to defend themselves?"
  • "Guns don't kill people, people with guns aiming them at people kill people."
  • "I carry a handgun around with me in case I need to take care of a situation, like someone (other than one of my friends) trying to rape a lady."

That thar is none other then the armpit of America- Paris, Arkansas :)

They ain't Okies, 'cuz Okies drink outta cans, we don't need ear protection, those kids look like they're new to shootin (at MUCH to late an age!),  and we drive Fords (I'm an Okie).

They ain't Texans, 'cuz no self respectin man would be caught dead with an import truck in Texas.

They ain't Lousiana boys, 'cuz lookit- there ain't no swamp!

ROFL!

The terrorists will flee from such formidable enemies :).

On a more serious sidenote: I've noted that you yanks are very casual around weapons. A good thing, to be able to see it as a tool, rather than some mystical DeathWand(tm).

On the other hand, I've seen many pictures and talked to some of my American friends, and it seems that alcohol and guns mixed together isn't that rare a sight.

I wouldn't drink before I go skydiving. I would not touch drugs if I was to go wreck diving. Won't even smoke if I am to go rock climbing. All are potentially dangerous things.

Same with guns: they are potentially dangerous things. Mixing alcohol with it seems a bit stupid, to me.

Is it commonplace, or more of a redneck (bad phrase, but I see redneck as a good thing, not a bad) practise? I.e do you have a beer, do some shooting, kick back and have fun, or is the norm that there is no drinking while there's shooting going on?

Just trying to understand the US gun culture :).

Like everthing else, you can probably find examples either way. Hollywood will, of course, offer up the most titillating/taboo version and some will believe that is the "universal" truth.

I doubt you'll find many serious shooters that drink prior to shooting. My dad's rule was the beer doesn't get out of the refrigerator until the guns are cleaned and back in storage.

As an incredible coincidence... that's the rule my sons follow. :)

OTOH, I'm not a  total climb the wall fanatic about it with respect to other people. I realize that one beer doesn't usuallly turn normal, reliable gun handlers into psycho crazed killers a la Hollywood. I also realize that even ONE beer isn't a good situation for someone who is NOT a "normal, reliable gun handler". :)

We just have OUR family way... and we stick to it. It's worked well so far.

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!
