Merge Formation...There are many things you can try.Here are a few good ones...Come in abreast but with 1000ft separation.As you get vis,your opponents are most likely saying"Ok,I got the one on the right,you go left!!"...Then at 2k distance you close the gap and criss-cross and have 200ft separation...If they haven't seen it before they will be confused and lose their train of thought for those important first seconds of the merge.
Another is to come in side by side and at 3k distance from cons one drops back 500ft directly behind.If the emeny planes are side by side,they will most likely go after the second plane.Your first plane however has already started his vertical by the time they pass the "Tail End Charlie" and has a half second advantage on his target.
Last one is my fave and is purely psychological...Flying close side by side,at 3k sep from cons,both half roll and fly towards enemy upsidedown.At 1.3k roll back to normal horizon.They will not have seen your initial half roll and when they see the second they will think you're rolling upsidedown and as you pass them right side up they will be thinking"WTF???"...Point being if you can play with their heads even a little bit,it shows initiative and can set the tone of the fight...
