Why the German fleet died...........
« on: February 02, 2002, 05:41:35 PM »
Power is a wonderful thing it makes all sorts of things possible...........

Except putting genie's back in bottles and resurrecting the German fleet............ (once you have killed it that is)

We ( I say we.... infact I was not "on" the arena tables today. I had hogged that duty for the previous 2 TOD's and others wanted a turn) had finally set the arena as per previous TOD's and whilst Buzzbait made some other mods I was going to quickly destroy the CV on the German fleet.

This is very easily done you go to the destroy objects button select the CV from the list of ships on the field in question and press destroy.

So simple it is.......

When one gets to this list one will find a list of 6 ships numbered from 0 to 5 all you have to know is which one is the CV.

I didn't ......................

neither did any one else I asked.....................

Well thought I this is Noooooooooooo problem all I doo is kill them all until I find out which number is the Cv then I change the arena setting for down time and ressurect them and kill just the cv.

Easily and quickly done......

I must admit to a feeling deep in the pit of my stomach as I joyfully started at 5 and killed each one until finally the cv sank under the instruction to kill number "0".

(If only I had started at 0)

You must have been there............... the slow realisation that if your premice is wrong then the consequences could be dire......

Anyway once they were all dead off to the arena settings I go and set down time to zero and await ressurection.............

and wait

and wait

and reset the down time  again... load it ..save it .... load it... save it..............

and wait

and wait

Elsewhere when the down time was changed it applied to stuff that was already dead. You could ressurect stuff quickly..............

This aint elsewhere.............. this is AH..........  stuff stays dead according to how long it was told to stay dead when it died.

this certain fact was beginning to dawn upon my consiousness...........

along with its ramifications................ ..... I had irretrievably sunk the Whole German fleet. (well for some 50 hours or more any way)The very core of Buzzbaits game play for this TOD..............

he was not going to be pleased.

The options were

a) place head in bucket and hope stuff gets better........

b) reset the whole arena which was now already running a few minutes late for the TOD. (which meant kicking every one out and  starting again.)

c) stealing a fleet from the British and running it with one less British fleet.

I put b) & c) to Buzz.

Now of course I cannot tell you all exactly what Buzz's inner thoughts were as he heard this news...........  my imagination is probably as good as yours in this context...........   suffice to say that the period of silence (that followed) was one  that I like to think of  as Buzz becoming at one with zen and thinking calm and cool thoughts in order to track his way through the crisis this idiot had just presented him with...................

yes thats how I like to think of it...............

any way we had problems communicating over the next 5 or 10 minutes  but eventually it was decided  for c) and Buzz changed C18 to Knight, repositioned it and I blew up the CV with the destroy button.

Its a power thing....... I do like that destroy button........

after which I admitted my crime to the general populace by way of explanation for the  now quite unreasonable delay  (some 20 minutes)

our communication difficulties continued......

There was low cloud over the East Coast of Holland and as time further ticked by I was sure it was getting lower and lower.

My fellow CM's were asking what the delay was......

(was the cloud getting lower?)

Players were advising that the delay was far to long.....

(yes it was.........indeed.......if I didnt know better............... the sky was falling)

When were we going to start?.............. Buzz could not advise me ? (it seems he was not even recieving my messages)

To stop the sky falling any further I advised that launch would be in 2 minutes......... the arena was set.........we were already 30 minutes late.............

lets roll..................

Unlock the arena and go!!!

but it would not unlock.............  every time I changed the setting it would not load......... what was I doing wrong?

(the clouds were getting lower again)

reset ............save............. ..password.............. load.............repeat

test...... no we were all still locked down.

you know how when stuff starts going wrong you need to find some one to blame????

"cock up or conspiracy?"

I began to wonder if some one else was not reseting my reseting as i reset it.

You know the answer ......its cock up ........cos finally it took and the runways were open..............

at last............salvation.... ...late but done.........

then Buzz came on my text line

I tried to reply but kept getting some .Radio message.......obviously it was not going thru......

Yes Buzz its OK I have launched them now sorry its late but........

"Why had  I launched them.............."    "Buzz had not finished briefing the LW"  " The Allies had launched prematurely"

The calming thoughts of ZEN had left my collegue at this point........ ZEN (fortunately like me) was far far away........

I was desparately looking for a hole.. it didnt have to be big just enough for little me so that when that rapidly descending sky finally hit ground zero......................

Fortunately at this point the allies had not launched........(or so i believe) stuff was spawning but held after some cm text line stuff from Buzz and my self.

Some LW may have launched early........... the logs will show it.......

and so I must humbly prostrate my self before the gathered  Saturday Night TOD community.............

It was I

I am unworthy...........

name your punishment

Oh goodness, what a nightmare that must have been!    Hehe, it's easy to say why start at ship 5, but then if you had started at 0, by Murphy's Law the CV would have been 5!  Oh well, you won't forget that in a hurry - and meanwhile I have learnt something else about setup!  :)

Hey Tilt,

I really felt sorry for you man.  Reminds me of one time I was in work and was running a program which was designed to directly access the main accounting database.  Cut a long story short, things went badly wrong and for 10 horrible minutes it looked like I had screwed the whole database for four state companies which use the system.  Yeah there would have been backups, from the nite before, but how the hell was I going to explain to over 2000 users that all their work over the past 3-4 hours was gone up the proverbial creek.  Anyway a few rollback transactions later things were ok again, but i'll never forget that feeling.  I felt your pain last nite.

Like some1 said watermelon happens.  It's only a game, we got there in the end.  SO a big and ty to you and all the CM's for making this TOD by far the best scenario i have participated in to date.

I have to share this with you tilt. I have had "many" similar stories with AH when I first started the Snapshots and Check 6 events. Some left me sweating. All I can say is I "really" understand. :)

On to my story. Not two weeks ago I had to set up another profile on my system at work for a teacher who wanted to use FP2000 for a class. I could not install a separate copy of FP 2000 because it wanted to over write my copy (which I did not want the other teacher using). So I decided to just make a "copy" of my profile. No problem, have done that before on other systems at school. I made her copy went into her profile and began to delete all the items she would not need. One was grade, all my grades for my students. Yes you can see where this is going.

I went back into my profile to discover all my grades were gone. Ugh! Well as upsetting as it was I was not in a panic. I bought a site license for our school to use a particular grading software that among other things allows us to "upload" all our students' grades so they and their parents can view them online. I call the company and explained what happened. Problem was they could only send me the grades, not the student's names. For some reason they will not transfer files with students names. A good reason I suppose.  I said fine send me what you have. I received it the next day and to make a long story short I spent MANY hours trying to figure out "via grades only" who was number 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,… Now I print up my grades every day. I had a back up disk, but only used that once a week or so because I figured if I ever had a crash I could just retrieve them from the remote site.  Hind site is 20/20 now. I have their latest version, which sends an "ID" for students. Sure would have made my life a lot easer.

You're a good man tilt. Those kinds mistakes as heart sinking as they are make you an above average Setup CM. I do wish I was there though, I would have told you it was "0". ;)
