Spit IX climbrate?
« on: February 03, 2002, 05:37:52 PM »
Can someone post a few charts of the real climbrates of the spit IX?

I was extremly suprised when i took the bird up, and got 3k/min climb with 100% fuel and a droptank without using WEP from about 10k-19k.

So i would like to see some real charts.

Porta's link is a great site.  I know the author (he posts here sometimes) and he has really done some great research on the Spitfire and other RAF aircraft.

Naudet, the dead spot in the climb rate is due to the supercharger gearing.  It doesn't go to high gear until a very high altitude.  This hurts performance at medium altitudes, but performance at 25k and above is fabulous.  It's one of the few planes that can do sustained hard maneuvering at those altitudes.

Those Mk XIV numbers just make a fella shudder. That was one potent plane.

The AH Spit's rate of climb indicator reads high.
The only way to accurately measure your climbrate is time between altitudes.
