Video Memory and Drivers
« on: February 04, 2002, 10:27:51 AM »
I had an unusual and unexpeted occurance.

My System as follows:

Windows 98SE
ASUSA7M266 Mobo
256DDR
Athlon XP1600 CPU
AMD761 Chipset
Hercules Prophet GeforceIII Titanium 200
Diamond Monster MX 300 sound card

Anyway...while using the 23.11 Detenator Drivers for the vid card, I ran the Dx Diagnostic Tool.  On the first page, the one that shows the system specs, it read only 55.5 vid memory.  Hmmmm   why isn't it showing the 64mb of vid ram my  card has.  My card came with the 21.81 drivers so I reinstalled them.  Low and behold I now have ( according to Dx diagnostic tool) 63.5 vid mem.

From this occurance I suggest all do the following BEFORE installing any vid driver.  DO NOT USE  the change adapter tool in Settings/Control panel/System Devices/Adapter/Change.  It is much easier I grant you, but leaves the reigistry so muddled your system isn't using the specified driver....seems to confuse the system.  Anyway I used Detenator Destroyer...after uninstalling using add/remove option in windows.  Then I reinstalled the 23.11s' again and had the same occurance (59.5 mem this time)
I then uninstalled the 23.11s again, used detenator destroyer, and reinstalled the 21.81s and got my vid memory back up to 63.5, which is normal.

In my humble opinion the 23.11 drivers are fudged.  I downloaded them from abitboy.com and I see they have been pulled.  I also notice the 27.00 betas are out.  Be very careful when installing vid drivers, they might not work as advertised.

Also, download the Dx Diagnostic Tool, it is well worth it!
