Rubbing Elbows
« on: February 11, 2002, 06:03:30 PM »
I was reading dicod's post and I had a thought.

What if we were to share our brushes with the rich and/or famous? I'm sure we have some good stories out there. I'll start.

As I have posted before, I was a Special Ed. teacher. I was also involved in the planning and organization of our County Special Olympics, and even attended the International Special Olympics, (as a coach...not a participant :p ).
Anyway I was at the International games and was pushing my athlete's wheelchair to the "celebrity" area. My athlete was actually not retarded (we were cheating according to the SO bylaws) but had Cerebral Palsy. John would point out the celebrity he wanted for an autograph, and I would do all the talking. This brought me into conversations with Phil Donohue, Marlo Thomas, Henry Winkler, Beau Bridges, Frank Gifford and many more. But thats not the story.
There was a "Picture tent" where the SO Athlete could go to have his picture taken with whomever he chose that was in the tent at that time. We waited in line, and when we got into the tent there were 3 celebs to choose from. I was ecstatic! Hank Aaron! Muhammed Ali!!! and off in the corner.....Dick Sargent. "John" I asked, "Hank or Ali?"
"Dick Sargent" he said.
I tried again....."you sure?"
"Dick Sargent" this time with feeling!
By now people were staring. I was lost. I looked longingly at my heroes as I slowly pushed John over to meet Dick freaking Sargent.
I will never forget the day I ALMOST met Muhammed Ali.

Hehe...got Slim Whitman's autograph

And if you don't know who he is, he sold more albums than the Beattles or Elvis in England....or at least it said so on those TV ads for the K-Tel records he was pushing :)

And don't ask how I ran into him......but the poor guy was eating dinner alone at a resturaunt I was at, so I figured, what the hell, and asked him for his autograph.......I still have the darn thing....funny as hell.

Name dropping time huh?

When I was eight years old Ringo Starr had dinner at my father and step-mother's home.  The only memory of the event that I have is knocking on our front door, which was locked for some strange reason, on a Sunday night after my mother dropped off my sister and I.  Ringo answered the door.

I turned around to my sister and said "Who is that?"

We then ended up watching TV in another room for the whole night!

Apparently Ringo and one of his buddies tried to play some tunes on our piano....he apparently remarked that we had the worst tuned piano that he had ever heard.

On Christmas night 1996 my old bass player/singer and I went to walgreens by the galeria in Houston to get a fire starter log.  Billy Gibons from ZZTop was there getting some pictures developed.   We turned into 8 year olds and went and introduced oruselves :)  Too much time on the guitar to ask for an autograph so we just did the hand shake thing.  Man that dude is skinnier than I am!

Wow, hard to top the Ringo visit! Meeting Gibons is pretty cool too.

When I was visiting Mount Rushmore in 1972 presidential candidate George McGovern and a secret service entourage appeared suddenly. I just stood back against a wood rail fence as they all walked past about 3 feet away. Got it on 8mm tape. I wouldn't have voted for him in a million years, but I did give him credit for being a bomber pilot in WWII.

I met Tommy "Hitman" Hearns at Detroit Metro Airport in 1981... just a quick handshake, and a "Hey Tommy, how ya doing man, give em hell"
