Author Topic: Why is it so tough for a vehicle to climb a hill? (Read 648 times)

I've gotten stuck several times while trying to climb moderate slopes in 1st gear. If you turn sideways to the slope you'll actually start to slide downhill. Is this a bug? I don't even try to climb the really steep slopes just a 10% grade or so up to a field town.

well i only know about the M3

see when you arent looking, all the goons get drunk and take it out on the runway cutting donuts,,,pulling brake torgues etc.

after an hour or so the tires are bald and it cant get traction on any sort of hill.

If it's a very steep hill then try reverse gear, especially in the M3.

All of us are driving backwards up hills.

The problem isn't with lack of ability to climb hills but wrather the super ability to be able to climb backwards.

Take a real looks some time at what type of grade you are trying to climb.

Yeah, but I thought this one was filed under 'gameplay'. I am not saying they should be doing 25 mph up the hill, but I think it should be possible to climb pretty much any hill. No reason not too. If you want to spend 4 hours doing 3 mph up a hill so you can sit and milk run a defenseless city, so be it. I dont see a huge threat, and hey, if the trains and convoys can do it, we should too.

having to do it in reverse, is well, silly. even if it is a bug.

Since we can do it, and the sun still rises, I think it should be possible in forward.

HT, for gameplay reasons, would it be possible to make GV's climb hills at half of max speed?

If m3 can go to 50mph, then when climbing a hill (say, 20 degrees or more slope) it should only go 25mph max.

Its very frustrating to get stuck at 5 mph in a hill and have every spitfire ping you out. Takes a lot time to drive (albeit the distance is necessary because of endless respawn), and then have a hill be the one thing to cause your demise.

It would also give the ground war more flexibility. We couldeven have tank battles for once, where folks can strive to get high ground instead of saying "fek it, I aint climbing 15 mins up a hill at 5 mph" and grabbing a spitfire and using the hizooka to kill every enemy gv that comes in.

GV battles in middle island of NDISLES are much fun, it would be great if such ground battles could happen in every field of every map. Giving GV's more speed up-hill would help a lot towards that end.

I understand this completely....The 3 mph up hill then slow travel
to anywhere that takes you an hour real time uuuuggggg...
I put a thread in another area with an idea to make it posible
for planes to drop a tank or truck into areas...oh the time you'd
save..nothing like driving a big ugly tank an hour and get shot up to just have to drive another hour....I'd rather just fly the planes..
this would greatly increase the ground threat, and those who like
the ground warfare would enjoy the game more...

Well the hill I was trying to climb was as mild as you'll find on these maps. I was trying to get from a VH to the nearby town to defend it, but couldn't climb the hill. If a vehicle can't climb the hill (not counting in reverse) , how did the town get there?

Just doesn't seem right.

The terrain looks smoother than it is. I assume this is because framerate is more important than modeling terrain to a level where it would be obvious that driving any vehicle is very difficult regardless of slope.

Modeling roads and bridges to allow traffic to all bases and towns as well as combining impassable and drivable terrain would make GV battles more interesting and provide choke points for GV interdiction. Maybe we'll see this in the future if it can be done without degrading framerate.

Absolutely agree FLS... Think of the fun defending a little town that controlled the roads leading up/over a mountain. Blowing up bridges to keep con GVs on the wrong side of a river. This could add a whole new level of strategy to the game.

GV's oughtta be able to travers all but the worst inclines at much greater speeds than they already do (or at least 75% of full speed level) ..if for nothing else than to allow greater fun in the game overall.

hmmm...or do you wind up with endless strings of dweeb driven Osti's and M-16's plugging away at airfields? Panzers sitting at max range (outside of ack) and zeroing in on runway spawnpoints?

When I'm driving cross country (in game)...I'd REALLY love it if I could get along much faster. However, when I'm trying to (flying) defend a field from attack, I don't really like getting shacked by ground vehicles I didn't realise were in the area
