I've always thought the hand-launch-no-gear scale idea would be worthwhile.  Less weight, drag, cost, simplicity, strength, etc.  Glad to see that it worked for you and that the idea is doable.

I used to do gliders mostly. You can get a decent glider going for under $200.  They can be a blast and you can fly them all day under the right conditions.

I saw a beautiful 1/6 scale spit auger straight down, full throttle from 2 or 300 feet.  I almost barfed.
I also saw a stunt plane whack a light pole at high speed.  Very dramatic, it just rained model airplane parts.  Cracked the engine open and destroyed most everything.  
Last week I saw a helicopter auger.  It blew parts everywhere.  Big bucks down the tubes on that one.
