The 109G6.
I used to be a dedicated buff driver....spent hours in B17s and Ju88s, and scoffed at the thought of 'driving' anything with a mere one engine.
Then my squadmates and I discovered a need for an escort, and the fact that they are extremely hard to come by when you need one.
So, being squad CO, I figured if you need something done, do it yourself, and decided to learn the art of fighter driving so's I could give my mates in their bombers a bit of cover on those long port runs ( this is back in WB days).
Being a LW squad, I decided to fly 109s and started with the F model.
It wasnt long before I discovered that not only was it great fun flying a fighter, the 109, if handled properly, was a killing MACHINE.
Moved to AH, first ever sortie here I upped a 109F4 and got a kill...with the old 1.03 energy/drag model, it really excelled in the vertical fights, whipping the pants off anything bar another 109 if you fought the vertical fight entirely.
After a while, I noticed that every 109 you saw was either a G10 (by far the most common) or an F4, with a couple of Finns flying G2s...no G6s, or at least VERY rarely were they to be seen.
I tried the G6 out, and found it to be a heavy, sluggish, pig of a machine...guess that explained the lack of interest in it.
By this time I considered myself fairly competant in the F4 model, and decided to 'restrict' myself to the G6 for a challenge, for the same reason, the extra challenge, I decided to allways add the extra 20mms, as apparently they detracted from the performance even more.
(Also, a great bloke by the name of Rekkof, a real clown, but one of my early online 'heroes', used to spank me all the time in my 109F, flying a G6R6 in WB....I figured if he could do it, I sure as hell could learn )
Anyway, with the gondolas attached, it WAS a complete pig, and it forced me to learn an entirely new aspect of combat flying...the Energy fight.
I found that after some time, I was actually beginning to like the G6R6 a LOT, once you learned her peculiarities, she would more often than not get you home again with a scalp or two to boot.
Tried most other planes in the game at one stage or another, and allways find myself strapping on a Gustav again ASAP, because nothin' else likes the way I fly.
So thats it, I originally flew a Bf109 G6/R6 almost exclusively out of sheer arrogance really, learned her 'tricks' and 'dont do's', grew to love her, and have yet to find something that suits the way I like to fly better.
Still struggling to be more than mediocre in anythin' though....guess they're all right when they say it takes time to teach an old dog new tricks

In Gustav we trust.
