Daytona 500... anyone watch it?
« on: February 18, 2002, 10:21:58 AM »
I have a new found respect for both Sterling Martin and Jeff Gordon.

They both were class acts on the radio when the "incident" occured and when Sterling was told to go to the back of the pack.

Very impressive to hear Jeff Gordon: "I had no choice, I had to block and I got sideways because of it... it was my fault" right as he looses the lead of the biggest race of the year.  No excuses or blaming the other guy.

I watched it.The Gordon Marlin incident was virtually indentical to when Harvick came down on Gordon earlier in the race.
Being a Gordon fan,I was upset with him...if he lets Marlin go,he still has time to try and pass him,and at the worst finishes second.
The new aero and restrictor plate rules package, designed to make superspeedway racing safer has got to go.Safer?that last wreck involved 16 cars I believe. All because they don't have enough horsepower to pass.

I agree to an extent... but what do you think happens when the same wreck occurs at 230 as opposed to 190?  There's definately a give and take there.

I agree on the Gordon/Marlin accident... it was pretty much the same thing.  I wonder what Marlin had to say about Gordon in that one?

Once again... Gordon knew he blew it and admitted it.  It was a classy thing to do IMO.

The same wreck would be less likely to happen. With the restrictor plate rules, the cars have so little horsepower(about 400-450)that they can't pull away from each other. Then you get those groups of tightly bunched cars, and if someone in front spins...ouch.
I agree,230 is too fast.I'm wondering if opening up the restrictor plates so they get about 600 HP,and making them add downforce might be the answer.
Any thoughts on what changes might help?

I drew 500 circles with a Bic roller pen. I drew them with a slow, methodic, droning motion, taking a break every 2 minutes to read ads in my Car and
Driver magazine. I think I ended up with the same experience as watching NASTYCAR.

F1 for me.  I just can't stand watching cars going in a circle. (shrugs) Enjoy reading your posts though! Then I can get a readers digest version of what happened instead of spending all that time watching autos go in circles! :D

First big wreck took out 18 cars, second wreck only took out 10 I think. A number of others had to drop out of the race due to damage or blown engines(actually only blown engine happened in the beginning).

In the end less than 16 cars (I think it was 12) completed the race.

It was cool, and no one got hurt. So yes, they are safer.

You can't be serious!  I can accept anyone who says that Nascar is boring.  Quite often the races are (prticularly the SuperSpeedway races like Daytona).

But to claim that F1 is more exciting is simply farcical.  Sure, that race to the first corner is exciting, but you might as well turn it off after that.  The only changes in running order after the 1st corner are typically the result of mechanical failure.  Or possibly due to a crash caused by a driver falling asleep after following the same car for half an hour and having no ability to pass.  Yawn.

LOL Ripsnort!  I got a good chuckle out of that thanks!

Gotta say I agree with you...

I think you need to be born south of the Mason-Dixon line to enjoy NASCAR.:D

If it's a choice between NASCAR and tractor pulling, it's tractor pulling everytime.

Even cricket is better.

As long as Tony Stewart got knocked out!  That made the race for me.

He has to be the second biggest crybaby in NASCAR!!

Totally agree DJ.  I expected Gordan to be cussin' out Sterling left and right ... and then I expected Sterling to be cussing out the officials left and right.  Neither of 'em did - totally surprised.  Definitely 2 class acts!
