Author Topic: Abit N3 motherboard (Read 321 times)

Does anyone out there have any opions on this new motherboard that Abit has? I can't remember the exact board number now, but they called it N3 (or something like that) Its supposedly completely built around Nvidias chipset (sound and video). From what I understand from Abit's release, the sound is built directly into the MB (which makes me a little nervous) Its pretty new, so I haven't been able to locate a lot of information out there on it.

If anyone has any info, or knows where I could go to get more info, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!!

I've heard of it, but haven't seen or used it. I have used MSI's K7N420-Pro, which is probably very similar. IMO it's a good board.

The onboard sound is definately equivilant to a SB Platinum, so don't let that scare you.

You do want to be sure to use Win ME, Win2k or Win XP though. Nvidia's drivers only work for those 3.

and from what I hear, ME is only if you really really want/have to stick with a 9x version

Bloom, I'm pretty sure that the installer is what doesn't work in win98 SE

There are nforce drivers for win 98 se, but the installer just doesn't recognize them, so you have to do them manually (to the tune of a 6 page PDF instruction "booklet"). At least that's what I am understanding from nvidia's website. Please correct me if I'm wrong!

I honestly don't know, the system I did was installed with Win2k. I'm no longer putting win9x (95, 98, Me) as the primary OS on any systems.

You may be right, I'm basing my statements that the drivers don't work correctly in Win98 from second-hand accounts. You might want to try nVidia's own drivers, they are on their web site. I suppose if it doesn't work right, you are just a reformat and reinstall away from one of the later OSes. (If you have a win98 disk around.)

I read that PDF, looks like you just have to do it manually.
