Best Detonator driver?
« on: February 21, 2002, 06:54:46 AM »
Got an ASUS V6600 Geforce 1 SDR 32mb video card. There are tons of drivers out there for it. The latest alter the font somewhat on my puter, and aren't that desireable.

So, what's yer recommendations on detonator drivers?

I'd go with either 7.78, 14.10, or 21.81.  Nothing later than that.

I think those are the most stable WHQL drivers.

I'm not sure the 21.81's are actually WHQL... but I know folks have had good luck with them.  Try the 7.78 's first, and then the move on to the 14.10's and the 21.81's if you don't have good luck with those.

When in doubt, stick to the WHQL drivers.  Also for older model cards, stick with much older drivers.  Most times the TnT2/GeF1 level cards work very well with the 7.78's and that's what I would recommend.  Also look around on guru3d and find detonator destroyer so you can wipe out all traces of the older detonators before you switch versions.

Hey lephturn, on the issue of detonator destruction, is this possible with WinXP given that it carries its own detonator drivers. If you destroy all detonators will the PC be able to boot at all!

Lephturn: thanks a lot bud!

Am downloading all three now: starting with the 7.78 and moving up as you suggested.

I suspected that the newer ones weren't the best ones, particularly for an old card like mine. Just hadn't any idea of what to choose, there's so many of them.

Will now see påerformance difference between the three and decide. Will get back to ya.

Lephturn.

That did it! Using the 14.48 drivers: stutter is minimal and only occasional, and directly related not to software but hardware(SDR ram), and the fonts are now readable. Everything is crisp, and I am getting very good fps :).

Thanks again Lephturn!

Not relevant really since Det Destroyer only works with 9x/ME.  However, even if you remove your device drivers for XP/2k, they will still boot in basic VGA mode, then they will "detect" the video card and install drivers for it anyway.  Detonator Destroyer with 9x/ME simply makes it easy to make sure all traces of one version of the Dets are gone before you install another version.  This is especially important if you intend to try and go from a later version back to an earlier one, as often there will be files or setting from the later version Dets that you can't get rid of.

StSanta,

Glad I could help...  after all, I need lotsa LW 190 drivers around to hunt in my Jug! ;)   bud.

Leph, I've tested the 21.81 and 21.83 drivers myself.  I'd recommend the 21.83s myself.  (They are WHQL certified.)  I do not like the 23.xx series drivers.  I haven't tested the new 27.xx drivers, but I do know they have some TV out issues with Athlon processors on their first release.  That tells me they were rushed out to match the release of the GF 4.

My personally opinion is the 27.42 are the best. When involved in a 30 plane furball with smoking buildings I don't experience framerate loss, with the other drivers I did.

Good info guys thanks.  I don't have a GF card, so I rely on you guys to fill me in on what to suggest to folks.

21.83 sounds like the ticket then.

Good to hear some of the 27 series works well, although I don't think I'd go there without a GF3 Ti series card or a GF4. :)

The 27.xx series are recommended for G2's to G4's, while the 7.xx and 12.xx series are best for TNT2's and first generation Geforce cards.

Last night in a 200+ furball never loss any frame rate.

27.42 gets a vote.
