Win 2000 CD-RW Disaster
« on: February 27, 2002, 05:12:20 PM »
DVD on Secondary IDE as Master. (Toshiba SD-M1502T)
CD-RW on Secondary IDE as Slave. (Acer 1610A)

Everything fine under Win 98SE.

I installed Win 2000 and there are constant errors.  Buffer underruns, power calibration area full, etc.

Mobo is Epox EP8K7A (AMD 761)
Athlon 1333
512 MB RAM

Any ideas?

I installed every darn thing on the Windows Update site.  All my drivers are the latest and greatest too.

Problem also occurs if I swap the drives, i.e. CD-RW Secondary Master, DVD-ROM Secondary Slave.

I guess I'll try DVD-ROM as Primary Slave and CD-RW as Secondary Master next.

If not, back to Win98SE.

Minus:

Here is the list of drivers from my MOBO:
http://www.epox.com/html/english/support/motherboard/drivers/download_ep-8k7a.htm

I didn't install the Miniport driver because there is no Win2k version.

I have the audio disabled so the VIA Apollo 686 chipset audio driver wouldn't install.

I did install VIA Apollo IDE busmaster.

I guess I should try uninstalling the busmaster driver, or finding a Win2k version of the Miniport driver?

Did you enable DMA mode for your cd drives?  Under win2k it's under the properties for the "secondary channel."

Funkedup although I use nearly similar setup and have no probs with my cd-rw, check http://www.viahardware.com where they have special versions of drivers for people who have cdrom related problems.

Check under the 4in1 download section.

Good luck.

Yes DMA is enabled.

Why would I install VIA 4-in-1 drivers?  It's an Epox mobo with AMD chipset.

Ah so its a pure AMD machine?

Most AMD76x motherboards come with a combined VIA southbridge. That leads to the need of some VIA drivers + AMD AGP drivers instead of VIA ones.

I'm not familiar with your mobo so I can't say for sure.

Edit: I just checked, your mobo does have the 686B so you need to install VIA drivers for that. Those came with your original motherboard drivers naturally, but as you ran into problems you can try to install different versions from the viahardware site.

OK that makes sense.

The IDE drivers I installed were from VIA, and they are the latest version.  VIA site actually says CD-RW should run better without those installed, so I will try an uninstall.

I did some browsing from viaarena.com:

Special Rom Drives (re-writers etc): Probably not recommended that you install the VIA IDE miniport Driver as the default Microsoft driver provides better support for such devices, in general. This is because ATA/ATAPI devices are controlled by complex commands and their drivers are written to comply with the Microsoft default IDE driver. But at the same time, in most instances the VIA IDE Filter driver would be beneficial for ROM drive stability.

There is a good comparison table of drivers at http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=66

I initially bought a 761+686B motherboard but even after 3 weeks of continuous tweaking, I couldn't get it to run stable.

I changed it for this KT266A board which has been rock solid compared to the 686 board. My only problem is a randomly occuring BSOD which is a problem that will be addressed in W2k SP3 according to MS bulletins.

Uninstalled the VIA Bus Mastering drivers and I burned a CD-RW with no errors.  :)
Time will tell if it is a true fix but it looks good.
Thx all!
