Airfields
« on: November 02, 1999, 07:06:00 AM »
Okay, we have been talking about Ackstars, and how to deal with it.  Some of this discussion has talked about changing airfields for respawning.

So here is a sketch I would like to see AH Airfields go.

Main Airfield.
Two Long (bomber) runways.
Two Fighter Runways.
Barracks.
Two Large Bomber hangars.
Two Medium Bomber Hangars.
One Medium (C-47/JU-52) Hangar.
4 Fighters Hangars.

Around this airfield would be four to six Dirt Hot Fields.  Here would be a Maintenance Shack, fuel truck, and maybe 1 or two .50 cals.  Here would be the open hangar like we currently have.

You would do the hot refuel/rearm from the four satellite fields.

Medium Fields.
1 Long Runway
2 Short Fighter Runways.
3 Satellite Fields.
2 Medium Bomber Hangars.
3 Fighter Hangars.

Small Field
1 Short Field.
2 Satellite Fields.
3 Fighter Hangars.

Then they could splatter small hot reload fields/ emergency fields about.

Taking out the hangars limits respawning at the field.  YOu can do hot reloads from any of the satellite fields.

Destroying fuel first takes it out at the satellite fields.

Same with ammo, etc.

I enjoy ackstaring and don't want to see it discontinued.

About 20-lb. test with a Dipsy Diver, I think...

Sounds like a great concept downtown

I'm looking forward to this kind of diversity in the field oriented strategy.  Sounds like a way to put the existing hangar model to good use and also make something special out of those satalite fields.

HTC?

Good one DT, I like it too. Talk HT into it will ya, along with replenishing supplies with a 47 from a rear base...(player flown of course)

That would be great too Mark.  Fuel goes down at a medium base or a 'support' base so you hop in a C47 at an adjacent base and load it full of 50 gallon fuel drums.  Sneak those puppies into your own base and drop em near the supply hangars where little men run out and roll them inside, thus replenishing the fuel supply at that field - same goes for ammo.

It would definately add to the utility of the transport aircraft (ie. C-47) and make the idea of blindly killing every inbound C-47 something to reconsider.  One thing that makes these planes boring is that when you see them you know that they're out to do one thing - drop troops.  Diversify the use of the plane and enhance its reputation while offering players a more play dynamic experience. IMO an enhancement like this is worth about the same as getting a new plane variant.

I like this resupply idea. Good excuse to add a He111 to AH someday.

Suggestions:
1. Choose a load of either bullets, bombs/rockets or fuel at mission start.
2. Have to land, and come to a complete stop in the "hot reload" area (when we get them) to unload the supplies.
3. No Icons and radar signature under certain height so we can "sneak" it in?
4. When we get ground forces you could airdrop them rations, cigarettes, magazines to boost their morale

Of course you would still blindly kill every enemy C47 you see, since they would always be up to no damn good.

Part of my thinking in this was that, according to what I have read, this is how airfields were set up during the war anyways.

Main concrete or asphalt runways with the tower and all that, and several small satellite fields for dispersal.

Each satellite field could have a bunker, fuel truck, ammo truck, AAA Truck with a 20MM or .50 Cal gun.  Maybe an Alert Shack in stead of a Hangar.  Put them in the same sector, just two or three miles away from the main field.

Ogre, have you read this?

In the long term I think what you are suggesting will be how things shake out.  I had ideas like along this line as well.

Although I'm sure it will expand soon, at present the editor is limited to the structures you see in the terrain now.  I used various combinations in an attempt to build for each country: a city, HQ/Training complex, ammunition plant/arsenal, fuel refinery complex, radar factory complex, and AAA factory complex.

Regarding Hangers.  Someone from HTC said in another post why they aren't there right now (special structures that require some additional work).

BTW, has anyone flown low over an enemy city yet?

One other thing I was concerned with was whether framerates would take a major hit around the complexes and cities.  I have a fast machine so I wasn't the best judge of when it was "too much".  Anyone have any comments on that?

So, AFAIK the sky's the limit on objects types, it's just at a temporary ceiling right now until they have time to get to it.

I have been seeing how low I can get the C-47 and P-51.

I have flown around 20 or 30 Feet through the cities.

I have a HP-8380
PII-350
96M SDRAM
Creative RivaTNT Graphics Blaster w/16 Meg VRAM.

Thought they were cool.  Ack is Rough.

I also wonder, since the ground clutter is a bit confusing.

When you parachute, at about 2500 Ft a phenomenom called ground rush occurs if you haven't opend your chute.  This would be alot like a black out, except is would be more of a clear tunnel effect (Myopic) vision.

Three times I have splatted mistaking the ROCKS and SHRUBBERY (Monty Python WOD) for the damn Sheep.

Glad to know you have read this ogre.
