some questions
« on: March 04, 2002, 04:30:07 PM »
2 month without AH ... it gives you time to think :D

1/ I was playing IL2 (beautifull), flying the ...hum 109 hum ... I noticed those funny looking flaps/airbrake/whatever at the junction of the fuselage/wing. They seem to lower like flaps, but they also open like airbrakes.

Can you tell me what it is and how it works, so I can impress my fellow jug pilots with my extensive knowlege of the enemi?

2/ A stupid question, I was wondering who had the idea to use retract landing gears first and when was it (and which plane).

3/ Back to IL2, I'm totaly ignorant on Yaks and 109s, is IL2 perf match the real ones or is their FM as spooky as Janes WW2?

4/ I saw a TU8 in IL2 for the first time. Was it popular IRL? Usefull?

More silly questions to come later.

Hi Frenchy! I hope I can see you in AH again soon :)

1. as RA said, it's the radiators, opened to cool off. They add extra drag so I guess it can be said it might function as a speed break. (anyway, in my opinion, the whole 'heat up' aspect in IL-2 seems very cockamamy)

2. Sorry, don't have a clue

3. All I can say is the 109s in IL-2 seem very simular(except the roll) to the 109s of AH in flight performance. Generally many people seem to note IL-2 FM as 'realistic' and I tend to agree(with the exception of the wild, twitchy trim functions). Yak-9Us seem also simular to AH Yak-9Us. The only plane I see some problems is the LA-5FN, which seems to hold E too easy in sustained turns. AH LA-5FNs suck at sustained turns, but IL-2 LA-5FNs do not. There's also the problem of acceleration being too weak in LW planes.. but generally I think it's safe to say IL-2 isn't as weird as Jane's WWII Fighters.

4. If I remember correctly, Pe-8s and Tu-8s were used extensively as dive bomber/ground attack aircraft at the Eastern front.

Pe-8 did certainly NOT dive bomb

It did however get used for several missions to bomb berlin not long after the war started.

They were pure night raids to retaliate for bombing Moscow, I think most ended up poorly with little/no damage. One interesting side effect was the major in charge lost so many of his planes to directional and engine faults he flipped out on Stalin himself and this resulted in upgrade the engines and installation of radio homing devices on soviet airfields.

No idea if he survived his victory :D

About the gears- I think the first fighter to ever have one was the tub like I-16.
The P-26a was probably close though- both were in design stages so close to each other rumours of one copying the other persisted forever.

When did the first retractable gear Grumman plane come? Thought there was a biplane one in the thirties?

Where is the "German crowd" when you need them?!?!?! Post a thread about how the G10/D9 should be perked and they will all show up:p

The TU-8 had gunners at the rear of the inborad engine, it looked really cool in IL2 ... were those 20mm? The IL2 description talks about 20mm and MGs as armement. Maybe AH buffers would like this 4 engine piggy.
