My coolie hat off to the French then. The Couger is a incredible piece of Flightsim hardware with unlimited programing potential. You can tell from the reviews of the guys that have them already, their awestruck with it.

Hmmm.....April then seems to be the time that I shall have my Cougar in hand. I hope that by the flight sim hardware gods own screwed up way for shipping things that the Chips and Bits batch gets sent early...

If I would have ordered from those European resellers it still would not have gotten here until sometime in April though.

Man it was good to get that pre-order in way back last summer for $249.99 plus shipping.

I'm Glad I pre-ordered my Cougar too as I really need it badly, my stinkin' Saitek with it's crappy hat switch is dying AGAIN. That's the second one I've gone thru !!!!

For as much as one of those cockpits cost to setup and keep running I will just stick with the set of HOTASS plans I have here waiting on Cougar time.

Looks good though. Next time I am in the Dallas area I will see if I can swing by to get a quick ride in those.

HONESTly:

YES, there is that dramatic 1mm "play" of the x-axis -
needless to add it's less than "used" !

NO, personally i did not encouter any "other" problem whatsoever -
just the opposite: the Cougar is even better then you could have imagined (mind, I'm talking 'bout expecting nothing but a "perfect" gift ):

Its look and feel is "real" -
this is not just a joystick (like so many other toys), but a true-blue flightstick, a - the - replica of the most ergonomic and useful gear the army has developed yet !

Its handling is not to be described -
you have to experience it to really believe there is no spiking no time no way (once you'll have it, take a look at the "Joystick Analizer": you won't believe your eyes )!

Its programmability is not only far beyond my wildest dreams (and everything any competitor could provide), but THX to James even a child could tame that beast - using all features, including the most advanced and sophisticated the world has ever seen , and without having to learn any code or syntax at all (you'll know why its little helpers are called "wizards" )!

Well, this is no "review of a preview" , and its incredible, amazing, unbelievable features, capabilities and quality should be well known by now ...

Is anyone moving up to the Cougar from CH gear. I am a bit pissed at CH for not updating Speedkeys to work with XP so am thinking of going for the Cougar setup. Trouble is it looks more aimed at Falcon than AH. The stick looks the same layout as my CH Fighterstick, but the throttle is totally different. I use the CH throttle as a view modifier, map, flaps, VOX, engine start etc.

Any thoughts on how the Cougar will work with AH. I can't think of a use for the pots on the Cougar throttle unless it can be mapped to mic gain or headphone volume!

I am planning on using the Cougar throttle for my brakes, radio ptt button, changing radio channels in AHVoice (if possible and if not then I know it can be done with BattleCom), flaps, clipboard map zoom in and out and flying in bombsight mode with the microstick. There are many others I am thinking about and I will most likely try what I had done with my F-16 FLCS and TQS setup. I am not moving in from CH HOTAS gear because the one time I tried it I hated it from the beginning.

Poor Zeb, years of using CH gear has got you thinking too small.

Sure you can use a view modifier but that modifier works for all the other buttons as well. Effectively doubling all your buttons.

You can also put the regular and 45deg up views on the same button (POV) with out using a modifier. In other words; hit it once get the regular view, hit it again, get the 45deg upview.

You also setup a auto view scan button like I do.= hit one button and scan all 360 degs of views up and down as your flying along. If your a bomber this feature comes in real handy. And then a button that pops you back in the bomb drop seat and holds the lookdown view (KP-Ins) for you.

A squelch with list of undesirables button..this alone is worth the price of the stick

A feature I'm personally looking forward to is the in-flight selectable gain/deflection stick calibrations. I'll be able to select in-flight between a "turn & burn", "boom & zoom" or landing stick set-ups.

Remember also... (off the Cougar site)
- 3000 distinct values on the main joystick axes for much finer control in flying, with the potential to increase this through firmware. Note that all other controllers and previous TM controllers distinguish only 256 distinct values from the joystick X and Y axes.
- 5 Full-Speed USB interfaces delivering responses 8x faster than classical USB devices.
Which means very smooth transitions = less drag = more go go

Cougar throttle pot uses;
trim, view zoom, map zoom, Pri & Sec arms selection (turn the knob to sel. guns,fueltanks,bombs,rockets), radio channel sel. just off the top of my head.

I'm still trying to figure out how to program a NOE (Nap Of the Earth) mode.

btw have you been by the CH site, thought I saw an WinXP update posted there.

Thank's Brent, that has answered most of my doubts. Now all I need to do is get my hands on one. I believe they are shipping in Europe next week. I was mainly worried about getting the same view versatility that I have with the CH stuff. In AH as with AW when I played there, views were the most important tools. Not quite as important in an F16 with all the electronics.

I did notice the Speedkeys for XP on CH site. Pity it only works with the USB sticks :-(

Thank's Brent. I have a game port to USB adapter here that I came across a year or two ago. However it won't work with the Pro Throttle/Fighterstick combination as far as the new Speedkeys software is concerned. I have been told that the new USB throttle and stick does not retain the profile in the stick in the same way the old setup did. It looks like the new Speedkeys for USB actively profiles in the PC the same way most USB sticks do. At least they haven't took that route with teh Cougar. Another plus in Thrustmasters favour.
