Hey Skuzzy
« on: March 10, 2002, 10:18:03 AM »
Was just looking at the spec's on my Asus P4T-E on thier website and saw this.

Q: What is RDRAM Turbo Mode

A: It's used to adjust RDRAM delay time. Enable RDRAM Turbo Mode will speed up the RDRAM.

Would this be a bad thing to turn on if it's already overclocked? (running a 1.7ghz at appx 1.86ghz by running bus up to ...115 I think)

...also, I assume this thing has the Northwood core you mentioned in another thread.  I can't find a single reference to Northwood on the website (for this mobo) however, they do referr to it in other boards, but at 18 rather than 13 micron???  Did I miss something?  The board also is supposed to support 2.4ghz and "beyond".  Little bit cornfused.

If you have a 1.7Ghz P4 it does not use the "Northwood" core (.13 micron process), but rather the older "Willamette" (.18 micron process) core.

All current Northwood core P4s have an "A" after their name.  As far as I know, the only current models available are at 1.6 Ghz, 2 Ghz, and 2.2 Ghz.  (The 1.6 Ghz and 2 Ghz models have both cores available.)

Compared to the Willamette core, the Northwood has a number of improvements that significantly boost performance compared to Willamette.  (They also run much cooler.)

Thanks bloom.

I did find something.  What does this mean?  (part of the latest Bios upgrade).

"5. Add support for Northwood CPU B0 stepping microcode."

Thanks in advance.  You guyz are a big help around here.

Uhmm,..bloom25, I have not seen a 1.6 Northwood, but do have a 1.8Ghz Northwood in my system.  Maybe a typo. :)  They do run much cooler than Willamette.

Tumor, I have do not have any experience with RDRAM based systems, as I do not use the technology.  I have always found it odd that a memory bus speed about 2 to 3 times faster than DDR RAM is only some small percentage faster, when it should be about 2 to 3 times faster on memory access.

Skuzzy, a 1.6 Ghz Northwood most certainly does exist.  (Have seen one personally.)  The 1.6 Ghz Northwood is in high demand by overclockers.  I was not aware of a 1.8 GHz though...

The add support message just likely means that they added support for certain Northwood core CPUs.  (A0 stepping indicates the first release of a new core, etc.)

I also have not built any Rambus powered systems.  (I personally don't like the company, and I refuse to use anything they design myself.  Their business practices are IMO unethical.)

Ok bloom25,..tit-for-tat :).  I was not aware of the 1.6Ghz Northwood.  I can vouch for the 1.8Ghz Northwood as that is what I have in my system.

Thanks for the info guys.  Unfortunately my list of stuff to get just grew by 1 Northwood CPU lol.

...will it ever end?
