Immelmann,Wingover,Flick and Flee and Retournment
« on: March 10, 2002, 12:41:46 PM »
Well, I habe some questions

1 what is Immelmann, and waht is Winover
as far as i know, Immelmann is a Half-loop, and Wingover is,that use Rudder to
drop head down and reverse heading. But in some artical they call Immelmann
Winover. well can u tell me,what is Immelmann?

2 someone call Flick and Flee as Wingover or Retournment, are they same thing?

3 about Wingover (or Sliceback, Immelmann, Retourment), some one tell me,
and the top of the climb, i will use rudder to turn, there are no prolem. and at same
time i should hold the stick and try to turn without bank(do not roll), i will turn
as on a plane. AND in some other artical, they say, that i should use my rudder and
at same time roll same direction. who is correct?

thanx a lot, so can u tell me the different in these Move? and when should i use which?

which is good for FW190?

The original Immelmann was like a Hammerhead but the entry/exit lines aren't vertical. It's a zoom climb until you get slow enough for a rudder turn. Whether you need to roll depends on your aircraft. The modern Immelmann is a half loop with a roll out from inverted at the top that trades airspeed for altitude while reversing direction.

For a Wing Over you pull up and start to roll into the turn. Halfway through the turn your bank angle is 90. You roll out as you continue the turn so that your wings are level again as you complete the turn.

The Retournment is a variation on the original Immelmann but instead of just turning 180 for a reversal you continue to rudder turn while rolling into the turn so your exit line is in the same direction as your entry line. The Retournment is a lag maneuver to reattack a slower target. You can use a Barrel Roll for the same end result while keeping your speed higher.

The Flick and Flee sounds like a snap roll entry to a split S. The split S is basically opposite the modern Immelmann, you invert and pull into a half loop to trade altitude for airspeed while reversing direction. The Split S can be used to attack or escape from attack.

Thanx a lot for the answer,i have only one and inportant question
when i use left Rudder(for example), should I use a right bank to hold the plane
to turn with out bank. or i should give a left roll at same time?

You've probably noticed that rudder input causes a roll in the same direction. You might want to allow some roll. For a combat maneuver you're more concerned with the speed of the turn. Staying in-plane for a rudder turn would only be a consideration in aerobatics. In any case use a little right stick to prevent the left roll or to control the bank angle.
