Il-2 good for anything?

Yup with .50 you would have to hit il-2 radiator or cockpit.  Any RL pilot account i ever read says that. If you shot il-2 fuselage with .50cal you could hose it all day with no effect.

AH DM is way wrong here.

The IL-2 is the best GV killer in the game IMO.
The 23 mm guns are the most lethal airborne anti-GV guns out there, even better that 4 x 20 mm Hispanos, again IMO.
The big rockets seem to have a very big punch, close is good enough with them.  They seem equal to about a 250 lbs bomb in GV killing power.
I regularly get 4 to 8 kill sorties in it.

Tour 25 - eskimo has 15 kills and has been killed 3 times in the Il-2.
Tour 24 - eskimo has 7 kills and has been killed 3 times in the Il-2.
Tour 23 - eskimo has 6 kills and has been killed 1 time in the Il-2.
Tour 22 - eskimo has 9 kills and has been killed 3 times in the Il-2.
Tour 21 - eskimo has 28 kills and has been killed 6 times in the Il-2.
Tour 20 - eskimo has 28 kills and has been killed 18 times in the Il-2.
Tour 19 - eskimo has 63 kills and has been killed 20 times in the Il-2.
Tour 18 - eskimo has 89 kills and has been killed 25 times in the Il-2.
Tour 17 - eskimo has 73 kills and has been killed 31 times in the Il-2.
Tour 16 - eskimo has 73 kills and has been killed 23 times in the Il-2.

My IL-2 advice:
Always take the big rockets.
Don't bother with bombs, the IL-2 climbs too poorly.
50% Fuel is always plenty, the IL-2 climbs poorly.
Avoid flying it when the enemy has air superiority.  The IL-2 can fight, but it's a slow dog.
When engaging enemy aircraft, try to only offer them a HO, its got better armor and great guns.
Against GVs, be sneaky.

The IL-2's tail wasn't any tougher than any other plane; I'd guess the reason it suffers tail failure is the rest of the plane is a flying tank and the tail is practically the only thing which is even somewhat vulnerable.

The whole plane is vulnerable in AH.

I was flying it today just to test it..

It took 4-5 hits from 37mm field ack to lose engine. No other parts lost.

It took 1 ping D800 from m16 to lose wing. Right from the first small 'dingding' the wing fell off.

1 ping from ostwind from d1000 to lose wing.

2-3 hispano hits to lose wing. 4-5 la7 shots to lose wings.

Not very tough is it? Compared to wartime reports which state the plane is vulnerable to .50 fire ONLY in two places, which didn't include the tail.

I had better success killing gv's at a5 when I took b26, droped bombs and shot them with .50's.

They died faster than with IL-2 cannons, b26 took much more punishment too before going down.

Il-2 I scored 1 gv kills / sortie (suicide run (Tm)) where in b26 I killed 2-3 each run.

If you'd like we can go on sometime in the TA or somewhere and test it out; I'll fly the IL2 and you can lob 20mm shells into me and see how many it takes.  Do this a few times and get an average.   Wouldn't it be better to have some hard evidence to back up your case?

I'm all for toughening the IL2, maybe people would have a reason to fly it then (although I still think the tail will always be vulnerable in relation to the test of the plane).

I have shouldered multiple hits from an osty before, and watched `them take 2 or 3 hits from my osty and keep coming.

It's really weird because my findings about leathality don't seem to coincide with many others.

I'm constantly getting 1 ping deaths (like I mentioned against d800 m-16 in il-2) even in the planes that are supposed to be durable.

I'm used to being shot down if I take just one hit from almost any plane. Part of it can be explained by lag and hearing one ping even as there are many hits.. Yet some of the damages just can'e really be explained. First 1-ping death to m16 (which even sounds highly unlikely) and next sortie an osty 1 pings the wing off, second ping takes the other wing. Different players too so it's highly unlikely it was any kind of cheat.

Of course that has taught survival skills, I try not to get hit at all during the fight - and I get by as my stats show. I don't attack gv's in fighters for reasons mentioned above, nor do I strafe acks. It's a one way run most times..

It's just the inconsistency that makes me wonder sometimes..

For you who don't know this, I'm MrRiplEy in main arena.
