Big Frame Rate Hit
« on: March 14, 2002, 12:24:06 AM »
Playing AH mindinao in the morning before 1.09 patch.  Tower  FPS 60 to 65 (no planes vis)  Runway...no planes vis also 60 to 65
In the air over mindinao 70 to 80 FPS.

Now....in the tower 45, on the runway no craft vis 45 to 48 planes vis 36.  In the air over mindinao 45 to 51

What gives??????  This is to big a frame rate hit!

System\
Athlon XP 1600
ASUSA7M266 Mobo
256 DDR pc2100 ram
VisionTek GeForce4 Ti 4600 with 128 DDR
Win98 SE OS
Diamond Monster MX300 sound card
F1 selected rendering
FSAA software controled
verticle sync on
1280X1024 32 bit
Dx version 8.1
Sony 19in. 420GS Monitor refresh rate running 91.1

FSAA is not turned off, nor was it turned off the last 3 days, but I have a decrease at times as much as 25FPS since the new patch without any changes on my part on settings

Also at MadOnion 3DMark 2000 PC comparisons, this PC is ranked #3 in published 3DMark2000 Benchmark scores.  This with FSAA software controled and verticle Sync on.....if both were off probably the Benchmark Score would be higher still.  This is why this FR drop puzzles me.  Would appreciate any input! Decreasing the resolution or color should not be an option or an answer to the problem.  Small FPS drop would be expected, but one this large should not be.

PimpJoe

Thanks for reply......but dropping the resolution is counter productive in my case.  With the system I have in no way should I have a frame rate drop of this magnitude.  I should be running very very well with the above mentioned system and settings.  I built this system with AH in mind, and didn't skimp anywhere, and I have the latest and best graphics card on the market with 128DDR of its' own.  I previously was running a GeForce3 Ti200 and after installing the GeForce4 I improved my FPS on avg. of 12 to 15.  But dropping as much as 15 to 25FPS with this new version is unrealistic, and should not happen at that magnitude.  I might be able to see a 5 to 8FPS drop......but 15 to 25FPS drop is wayyyyyyyyyyy to much in my humble opinion, and as I stated I didn't change a thing.  Just dloaded and installed new version.

Ah....

Sorry, but all above 24 frames is fluid for the human eye... anything over 30 and you will notice no differnce (Exept in frame counter :D )

I do not understand why some poeple upgrade for 500 US$ to get from 50 to 100 frames...its worthless :D

The 'Myth" that one can't notice over 30fps is just that a myth.  Skurj replied in BUG reports that one can notice FPS over 30 unless motion blur is added.  The reason I noticed is that my eyes got strained or tired faster, that's why I checked my FR in the first place or I never would have!

Thanks for replies

Haven't noticed any drop here. Running a 1.4ghz Athlon with GF3 and 512mb RAM. I run at 1600x1200 32 bit and I get a steady 75fps in the air (limited by refresh rate). It drops a bit in smoke over a busy field, but never below 30.

1.09 upgrade will cost me about $175
« Reply #10 on: March 16, 2002, 01:31:04 PM »
I have also taken a big hit on frame rates since the 1.09 upgrade. ALL my squadies have made the same observation, even those with higher-end computers.

I was averaging about 40-50 fps. I'd occassionally see FR of 60. FPS dropped when I'd engage, to high 20's - mid 30's.

Since the upgrade, I'm averaging high 20's to mid 30's fps just flying from place to place. I rarely see 40 fps, and have yet to see 45 again, much less 60. FPS usually drop to 20 or below in a furball now. I can barely score a hit anymore, as picture actually seems to blur, and planes leap from one postion to the next, versus making a smooth transition.

I have a 32 MB GeForce 2 pro video card. I'm going to have to get a new video card to continue playing. GeForce 3 ti200 runs about $150 or so on some web sights, plus tax, shipping, and handling.

To sum up: the upgrade is too much for my computer to handle and it is going to cost me a chunk of money to continue to play. I do not believe that I am the only one in this position.

if you have the money get the ti500, better than the ti200, the ti200 was designed as a value edition of the geforce 3.  If you are the type that knows what you are doing though, you can overclock the ti200 to make it as good as a ti500

FRs dropped from 50-70 to 20-40 with 109, so count me among the discontent.
I wonder what's causing it? Integration of ah voice? The blinking base markers and base under attack warnings? Were additional strat mods made? I'm just curious. There's lot in 109, but nothing that would seem to cause such a big hit.
I definitely do notice a difference in gameplay, particularly when trying to draw a bead up close.
I'm I'm poor, cheap and stubborn. I hate upgrading, but if something doesn't change,  looks like it's time for a new vid card or something.
