RAM, you not telling us something???
« on: May 26, 2000, 11:04:00 AM »
Hey RAM,

Are you secretly flying for the RAF?    I was looking through my RAF Sqn listings and I found the following...

RAF 401(RAM) Squadron - formed RAF Digby by renumbering 1 Sqn RCAF.

Aircraft used - Hurricane Mk1, Mk IIB, Spitfire IIA, Vb, IXB, XIV, XVI etc....

BUT.... also listed was a Fw190!!!    So, you been flying this Fw190 in 401(RAM) Sqn?

Something fishy going on...

Regards

Hi

Captured German aircraft became part of the 1426(Enemy Aircraft Circus) Flight which was initially based at RAF Duxford and then RAF Collyweston (not far from me, and now part of RAF Wittering).

The German aircraft included:-

Bf 109E-3, 109F-4, 109G-2, 109G-6, 109G-14, Bf 110C-5, Fw190A-4, He111H-3, Hs129B-1, Ju88A-5, Ju88A-6, Ju88R-1, and Ju88S-1.

Other German aircraft may have been used by specific Sqn's if operating overseas, such as the Fw190 with 401 Sqn.

Hehehe,  Ive been known to fly a pretty mean Spit 14 in my past.  But to really know the enemy one must know his aircraft, its strengths and its weaknesses.

Unfortunately, Spits dont have many weaknesses, especially the 14.

Hi Pongo

Sorry, you must of misunderstood me, I was just quoting which planes the 1426 Flt had in their possession as they were the main Flt that only had enemy planes (the ones listed above were the only ones they had).  There were other German planes being used by RAF Sqn's dotted all around for training or secret operations.  The 1426 Flt literally was an Enemy Aircraft Circus and they would tour certain airfields in Britain giving training guidance etc... guess it would be something like modern day aggressors, but also just showing what the sillouette of German aircraft look like.  Raw recruits could learn an awful lot by something so simple.

The 401(RAM) Sqn, as mentioned, had a Fw190, and as my book doesn't tell me which version that particular Fw190 is, it could be the RCAF one that you've mentioned.  401(RAM) Sqn was mostly made up of RCAF.

Cheers
