New and/or Old way to kill a BUFF

Flying the B-17G I got attacked by a N1K2.  The weird part was that he would not close to attack, but instead parked himself about d1.0 to d1.2 my low six.

Every once in a while he would climb up, pop off a few shots then dive to that position on my low six again.  He never closed to a range of less than d750.  The entire time he was on me and eventually shot me down.  

About then is when it dawned on me.  The N1K2 was playing the "net game".  He was staying out of the effective range of my guns, which was d800 on my FE, but closing to a range where he could shoot and damage me.  Kind of sort made him not risk a thing IMO.

This seems to be about the 4th time I have noticed this behavior, but finally rang a bell this last time.

My guess is the tactic goes like this:
  • Use the net lag thingy to shoot and not be shot back at
  • Kill the BUFF tail gunner
  • Kill the BUFF

Hi

 I use a simmilar tactic all the time to attack buffs if I dont have alt advantage. The idea, at least, for me is to quickly get into a blind spot of the B17, fire a short burst and leave before the ball turret fires at me. This is what I do, it sounds simmilar, but may not be the same as what you saw. Basically i dont think it has anything to do with lag, but more from the attack in a somewhat blind area of B17 and the fact that it comes at an unusal angle and lasts only a second or two.

I must be missing something. I didn't think the B17 had a blind spot in it's low 6 position.

Ever try dodging? Those rounds would take over a second, possibly 2 before they reach your B-17G. A gentle weave should put you in a totally different patch of air by the time they arrive.

Oh yeah, that's right. HTC already thought of this one, the day they put guns in the B-17G. AFAIK the bomber's guns have always had a longer effective range than the fighter versions to counter "netlag" issues with tail-chase gunnery.

Your guns cant kill an enemy fighter at d 1.2...
 I sure can start lighting them up at that range. Its hell on your accuracy but certainly I would be full on the trigger at 900...

Yup, no way I would let anything that close. I open at 1.2 or so and let them know I know where they are... most guys will break off to regroup, giving you time to egress...

BTW, I set my buff gun convergence way farther out than in fighters... something on the order of 600-800.

If the N1K is staying at that range then throttle back and light him up with your belly gun.  He'll pull away, then throttle up and go in other direction, hopefully getting a good shot from your tail gun.

Well, it works in theory...

Buff guns can kill a fighter at farther than D1.2. I was shot down by a 17 gunner at D1.6 to the side. I thought I was out of range and on the beam of the buff but the top gunner hosed my plane and took it out. This is not unusual either. When I have gunned a buff I was noting hits at D1.8 or more on closing fighters. I start firing at D2.0 if the fighter is attacking. Turning tracers off helps to see the hits too.

If the fighter is closing relatively slowly on my 6, hi or lo i fly nice and level.  If he hasn't seen me fighting any others recently I let him close to 1.0 or so, and then blast him +)
Think they think u r on line up or just not payin attention +)
If the fight is fast and furious i start blasting at d1.4 however if i start blasting too erly i run outta ammo too soon

OK obviously no one that has posted in this thread has had this happen to them, because only the response from Grun made any sense to me at all.

The N1K2 came at me from a position of superior altitude and speed and could have atttacked me many different ways.  He chose this attack method for a reason.  The attack duration was 3-5 minutes, with the N1K2 performing this delicate "out of harm's way" attack.  

Like I said this is the 4th such attack I have faced, all seem to be against N1K2's during the morning PST.  From a buffers stand piont you all made good suggestions.  Did it nod in your head maybe I tried each and every one and why then would I still post up?

I tend to forget at times why I post in UBB and this is one of them.

I'm trying to think about what you said on the net lag.  I've heard that arguement before, but imo thinkning someone's using "net lag" is far fetched unless one of the parties is obviously laggy.

But in your original post you seem to imply this is the only reason he stayed back there.  If I could fire my LW guns at that range I would.  Buff gunners have reached out and touched me far beyond belief and if I can stay out of his good "Aimed" fire I would.

Minotaur,

Because of the net lag thingy HT has made the buff .50cals not be regular .50cals. Well that's the impression I got from one of his posts that the buff guns are adjusted to compensate for the net lag.

Like others have said the gunners can hit you way out to 1.2 and prolly beyond.

If a fighter attacks me with a high closure rate, I let em have it at 1.5 - 1.4 .  If he creeps up, I wait until 1.0 .
