Flying the B-17G I got attacked by a N1K2. The weird part was that he would not close to attack, but instead parked himself about d1.0 to d1.2 my low six.
Every once in a while he would climb up, pop off a few shots then dive to that position on my low six again. He never closed to a range of less than d750. The entire time he was on me and eventually shot me down.
About then is when it dawned on me. The N1K2 was playing the "net game". He was staying out of the effective range of my guns, which was d800 on my FE, but closing to a range where he could shoot and damage me. Kind of sort made him not risk a thing IMO.
This seems to be about the 4th time I have noticed this behavior, but finally rang a bell this last time.
My guess is the tactic goes like this:- Use the net lag thingy to shoot and not be shot back at
- Kill the BUFF tail gunner
- Kill the BUFF
