Man I really think they got the P47 right.  I think HT and crew really modeled it well.

Out of curiosity:
How many people thing the jug (P47) is a great plane?  and why

I think it's great because:

1.  It carries a lot of stuff.  On one mission today I got 5 kills using my bombs, killed a vehicle hangar also with the bombs and my rockets, got 2 or 3 acks with my guns, then killed 4 planes (yes some of them were taking off) and still had plenty of ammo left when I got hit by a re-spawning ack.

2.  It takes a licking and keeps on ticking.  In the Typhoon, the first shot from the ack seems to always hit the radiator, and the plane is a glider almost instantly.  With the Jug, it's less common to get an engine hit, and when it happens you have a chance of making it home.

3.  It performs just well enough to beat a few planes.

4.  Did I mention it carries a lot of stuff?  With the 8 guns and endless ammo load, you can open up on acks at about 1500 yards and walk the tracers in.

It's my favorite plane of the set and I would fly it more often if I could see the VSI.

Weave,
have you tried setting your position back from the original using the down arrow key? When you do press F-10 to save it. Granted, it doesn't show the whole VSI, but it does show the top half of it.

I have been enamoured with the P-47 for years. Since I was a teenager (that is a long time ago). I bought a book called "P-47 at War" some years ago that fueled the flame. I have always liked the big shouldered look of the plane and of course the eight 50 cals.

I used to try to fly it in WB but was not good enough to exploit the FM in there but did use it a lot as a Jabo fighter.

In AH it handles well enough for me to be able to do some good with it. I still can't exploit it's use as a Jabo fighter in AH as well as I could in WB because I havn't quite figured out how to aim the bombs and rockets. I used a sight in WB that gave me that aim point but have not practiced it enough in here to do as well.

It's a great big ole hunk of an airplane with good survivability. It turns better than I would imagine it would and has good speed.

I don't really fly much of anything else now... it feels comfortable, like a good pair of work boots :-).

I absolutely love it. It's not a Spitfire and it's not a 190--A5 but it's certainly not the pig it is in AW or WB's. Good acceleration, awesome zoom climb, can hang on the prop, good dive, with a noth of flaps I'm not worried about doing one turn with anything (key is one turn) and one helluva massive punch all the while it takes it plenty of damage itself.
BTW, I've come to learn what the VSI is based on the cockpit angle off the horizon.
Remapping keys for a forward down view screws me all up

what do you need the VSI for anyways . u can see the altimeter and that's enough IMO (coming from real world flying where ou're already 200 feet off when u concentrate on the VSI only ..)

and the JUG ROCKS!

Awesome Airplane AND fortunately a tad slower than the HOG

I believe its the first plane I am getting a K/D over 1.  That says a lot.

Tough plane that will linger.  For some reason I am flying smarter, just wish the guys I drag for most of the time were better shots. (The Wrecking Crew does seem to have damn fine shots, but many a knight has been a wee bit late on the trigger.)

I am learning to Jabo effectively too, and I have killed several bombers and survived afterward.

Yep, the Jug is a good plane to fly.

Yep, this is the plane I've been waiting for in AH...and didn't even know it   .  With practice, you can easily kill a vehicle base single-handedly.  It's the only A/C I regularly risk strafing ack with.  The other night, I tangled right over enemy-held A13. Killed a low Hawg, then a N1K, then a B-17. The Fort hit my oil line, but I managed to run from a very persistant P-47 that I dragged clear back to A13 where someone kindly shot him off my tail (thanks, whoever that was in the Yak).  I poured the coals on all the way back and managed to land under power (belly-landed, since I was minus my left gear,  an aileron, my rudder, part of the elevator and who knows what else   ). I also landed with about a thousand rounds in the bank.

The official Buccaneer anti-airfield strike package is a B-26 (ack-popper), four Jugs, and a goon. Rolls em up like and old rug   .  Viva la Jug!

The JUG is definitely becoming my favorite AH ride.  Not at all Uber but a really nice all around performer.  As an added bonus, she is a rock steady gun platform.  When other aircraft have their noses bounce around like a beach ball in rough seas, the Jug just points and shoots straight as an arrow.

I've always known there was a reason why Hub, Robert Johnson, Gabby and the rest of the 56th did well against the Lufwaffe before the German's had been worn down by the overwhelming material advantage of the allies.  I view their accomplishments in a higher light than the subsequent exploits of alot of the Mustang units due merely to the higher average experience of their foes.

Plus, my dad flew F-105 "Thuds" in Vietnam so I'm biased toward Republic Aviation aerospace vehicles.

p.s. The F-16 isn't a JUG, but she's actually my favorite ride (big wide toejam eatin' grin!)

The jug is my new favorite ride because.

Dives like a brick.
.50 cals rule
good visibility
lotsa ammo
fast enough to outrun stuff i cant dogfight
rolls ok, but not like my 190
takes a lickin and keeps on tickin

Vyper, are you aka Slickster? I only ask because his father also flew 105s, though iirc he also flew P47s.

I love it because it carries 1/2 of what a B-17 can, lol.

Same as Funked...

I allways take 100% fuel 2 1000lbs & 1 500lbs. I 1 pass on a field i dropped 2 1000lbs on FH and continued with guns to finish it off,on the pullout i killed the FH a Spit that came up in the FH a Zero that started domn the runway & a p51 that just pulled his gear up. Went vertical, came over the top salvoed to the 1 500lb droped it on VH and kept on it with guns, kilt VH & 2 m16 coming up in the hanger,on the pull out i straffed a m16 just a little N of the VH.

So,basically in 1 minute,i killed 2 Hanger 3 A/C and 3 Vehicles.. Got 3 more A/C on the Vultch and lost my wing in an HO with an N1K2. Damn lovely plane the p47..

Dog out.....

You gotta love 8 50s. Bam-bam-bam-bam. Two more than the P-51D. And almost as fast on the deck running home to mama.

And, as somebody else said, it's rock steady.
I've found the anti-Jug though: The George.
I dunno how many sloppy Jug pilots have died underestimating the closing speed of the N1K1 in the MA.
