I might add one other suggestion.

Yes, let the baggage boys handle the comp at the airport, but before you pack it, remove the hard drive and pack the hard drive in a small box.
One small enough you can carry with you.  Security will not give you any grief about the hard drive and as the hard drive is the most fragile piece of equipment in the computer system, it is a good idea to carry it with you, if possible.

Just a thought.
