I would fundamentally disagree with that distinction, but if that is in fact the case, how does that distinction defend the use of the term?

I also think your comparison is lacking veracity.  I don't think that most of us would accept redneck and towelhead as having anything even resembling the same meaning aside from on the most superficial of levels.  Do you think that 'spear chucker' isn't a derogatory term?  It fits into your generalization, but try to imagine saying the term to someone from the group you are referring to in a way that wasn't insulting.  There isn't that kind hatred and fear surrounding 'redneck' (which is in any case a reference to a *choice* of life/dress/etc. it's like someone with purple hair being a 'punk rocker').  We have labels for lots of groups of people that have nothing to do with culture or race, and don't have the same sort of connotations.

You might argue that *you* don't mean it that way, but like a swastika, it doesn't matter what you think, because it symbolizes something that is terrible and painful to the rest of the world.

If you want to get technical about what this particular N word means-

It's being uneducated and ignorant-- and is poor.

Yes, it has racial connotations- but it's true meaning is basically like calling someone a ignorant dumb f*ck piece of toejam.

Ya know... you may be right on that one.  seems none of my ex wives were fond of it.   Apparently tho, the male counterpart to that word is quite acceptable.

There are just as many white cupcakes in the world as black ones.  Peruse your dictionary if in doubt.

That said, some words are loaded, and this is one.  I am ashamed of all you boys that can't even bring yourself to say the the "N" word. LOL.

I suppose that ya'll saw the AP about the message some kid chalked on a bomb, too, eh?

"Bite this studmuffin" or something similar. Whoop-de-doo, bring out the ACLU, the NCCAP and hang that boy, whoopee it! this is 'merica and we can't have any of that freespeech roadkill.

Words, as I tell my small chillins, can only effect you with your consent.  And this isn't a free speech issue, anyway, it is an issue of what HTC should tolerate on their corporate boards.  Personally, If I were them, I would ban everyone that posted on this thread, and a couple more, just for good measure.

Can't we all just get along??

But considering the slurs used to describe anyone living right of Turkey, and the left of Japan nowadays...it would seem that this argument is pointless.

It's only a bloody word, that wasn't even being refered to anyone!

Towelhead refers to a religious not racial group, Rednecks are so dumb they rarely understand the insult implied, but the word "cupcake" has been used for century's to perpetrate the most hidious and evil crimes on a minority group who were denied access to their most basic human rights.  IMO if anyone uses it to insult another on the board, they should get a warning, then banned.

But of course naming a picture you've altered "stupidwhiteboy" and posting it to the UBB is perfectly acceptable. See'n as how stupid white boys aint listed as one of the downtrodden Americans yet.

BTW, Redneck originally refered to violent striking coalminers of the appalachias who wore red bandanas around their neck to show membership in the newly formed coal miners union.

That's the wrong word.  Try saying a few other C words to your wife.  When you wake up 3 days later laying in a pool of your own blood looking over at a severed appendage, you'll know you got it right.

I love it when people are trying to be so PC that they can't say "cupcake".

It's a word not a butt fungus so you can say it as long as you are not directing it at someone.
