Numbers in the MA... too many?
« on: March 16, 2002, 09:32:12 AM »
Hey fellas

Whats your opinion on this?

Personally I think a host cap at 550 is too much... hell I think 400 is 100 too many...
Bigger (#'s) is not always better.  If the big numbers are part of a peein contest with the competition we players don't give a damn.

The big numbers create comms problems, even if ya squelch

I have no problems if HT is just testing the waters, but the current terrains can't handle these numbers.  I understand a new, larger map is on the way, which of course is a good thing.

For now I am in "wait and see" mode, and I will give the larger map a chance, but as things stand right now, I'm not happy.

I love the numbers.   Makes finding a fite fast real easy.   Lot's of 10 vs 10 fites and higher.

Agree to 100% Skurj. It sucks with 400 in the arena, I've got my hopes up for the 512 maps, I've been asking for larger maps for ages now and we're finally getting it, WITH new strat system! :)

CT is and will always be better then MA IMO though :)

The crowds don't bother me TOO much; one thing having larger maps will not fix is the communication problems.  It will also not fix issues with netlag in those huge 30-40 plane furballs.

Not to mention AH could have far more variety if it used a separate arena system.

I've got nothing against trying out the larger maps/more people in one arena; I just feel that in the end this system is wasting some of AH's potential.

I don't like the crowds of the MA.  I cut my flight-sim teeth back in AW small pac.  There was never a huge crowd in there, but it was the most pleasant of my sim experiences.  Some say more than a couple arenas will split the community, I don't agree.

The MA is too crowded for me, and the CT from what I've seen lately just about always has a 2 to 1 advantage in numbers for the allies.  I don't care to fly for the Axis, but I don't care to gangbang them either, so that's not a place I want to be.  I need a third option.

Aside from lag problems, I think high numbers is what the MA is all about. Full-scale war with skies full of aircraft.

But I hate the MA "gameplay" and love the CT "simulation", but I also get tired of flying axis aircraft. I don't see a solution to that problem that uses historical planesets. I am an American and grew up loving P-51s, F4Us, and B-17s, so of course those are the planes I want to fly. Combine nationalistic bias with the fact that axis planes generally require more skill and you end up with either lop-sided numbers or a bunch of people who are unhappy getting stuck flying Bf109s and Fw190s all the time. If you make the CT such that you get assigned to whichever side has lower numbers, people won't play at all. I hate to say it, but for me to get the full entertainment value out of AH, we need tons of more Luftwobbles

One must definately consider the MA numbers concerning flight strategy.

For me, the low MA numbers allows a much higher offensive type flying and a higher K/D.

Higher numbers tests my SA to a much greater amount.  My flying style is much more defensive and my K/D really drops.

If I had a pick, I would prefer the higher numbers.  Too each their own.

Personally I love the big numbers, and my opinion is that bigger IS better :D

Naturally, the terrain should match the numbers, and it will, in a short time.

More...bigger.....better

don't forget the M in MMOG.

We have alternative arenas already, and they will probably be developed further as demand/cost allows, but for me, more is definately better.

I wouldn't have a problem with numbers in the MA except for one minor problem. The server doesn't seem capable of handling the load. When numbers are up over 300 to 350 the pings and packet losses escalate dramatically. Until the server situation is fixed increasing the player load is counter productive to game play.

***Avid throws dime on table***

I would like to see it smaller based on the current map size. If maps go bigger that would be a big help. Seams lately that you are either getting ganged or have so many friendlies around that ya can't buy a kill. Of couse when it gets to frustrating in the Arena de Gango Bango I just head over to the combat arena. Plenty of one on one's there.

I miss that time early last year when I knew almost every single person flying in the MA at any given time! :(

Who the hall are these people now?

Personally, I like the numbers!  Target Rich Environment ... numbers!  However, a good balance is needed to maintain playability too.  Let's look at the new size and give it a chance.  I do not see more warping or problems now, as I did in the past.  I am running DSL and that may be an issue too, but I see normal warpage.  I have been dumped as much or little, as usual.  The last few were my freakin' BellSouth provider!  The BS Server disconnected me, not HTC.

Sadly, Air Warrior never could handle these numbers.  And they never had the playability or modelling and graphics we now enjoy.  I tried flying BigWeek in 1997 on AW, and it never went off!  The arenas couldn't handle the numbers.  I flew BigWeek here, and we had the numbers and still we had playability.

I find that discussion in these forums is healthy.  It promotes growth in AH.  When I started flying here, we only had 4 or 5 planes.........that's all!  Look where we are now.  Be patient Grasshopper......and you will reap the harvest of life, itself. Rome was not built in a day, and perfection, takes a little longer!
