learning curve, schmurning curve...

learn it, it's worth it.

Just like AH.. stick with it.

Easy learning curve = simplistic gameplay/unrealistic

Has to do with patches, I am running very recent gear and the game runs fine. Just have to install the 1.201 patch at papy.com, the of course there are all the graphic updates.

No Creamo, the Rendition chipset has been dead a long time. They made like 2 or 3 chipsets, which were very good- better visual quality than the Voodoo1 and faster.

Somehow S3 chipsets lasted longer, how in the world that ever happened is beyond me.

I owned a S3 ViRGE (un)3D deccelerator, most horrid piece of garbage ever... and somehow they are still making 3D chipsets.

I believe that S3 was purchased by Diamond... or the other way around, though that seems very unlikely...

Dirt track racing / sprint cars is imho a nice little game, fun, fair graphics, and GREAT sounds! But... it is just another rerun of the circle/oval track thing. Even if dirt makes it a whole new story... lol, how's about you nascar boys get in the mud? LMAO!!! I would recommend one of the f1 (formula 1) racers as they have mostly road tracks and a few oval tracks for good measure (what would it be without indy?). Honestly, before you give up on oval/round tracks, think about the strategy involved in that... you have a predictable course, the better set up car should win... IF the driver and pit crew is up to the challenge! Just one more thing... if you want to get serious about racing sims, a wheel is a MUST HAVE! Just like a stick is a must for AH. Sheesh, if we overgrown kids would spend this much money on other things... lol

All this talk about GPL :(

Had some fun times with the old AW crowd racing every Saturday. Nothing like racing with people you know.

I wonder if there are people here with enough bandwidth to host some races:)

Those bias ply tires and GPL's physics made for a very good sim.

Grand Prix Legends and NASCAR 2002 are the ONLY "driving sims".  Period.  Both are awesome, and difficult(GPL especially so).   An updated GPL with graphical add-ons, etc.,  is  nearly equal graphics-wise , and superior physics-wise, to any "modern" F-1 sim.

NASCAR 2002, not surprisingly,  has a more advanced physics model and is more "realistic" than GPL.   N2002 also has better MP than GPL, but both are way ahead of anything else.  And if you think racing around in circles is "easy",  come on out to the next GROWL NASCAR race and "prove it".

We have 2 Online Racing Leagues comprised of WWII online air-combat players.  If you think you have what it takes, drop on by and join-up:

Guys,
Thanks for all the input, I've been reading what you all have said and looking at web-sites dedicated to these sims.
Rally Trophy looks exactly what I'm looking for: cool old cars (Volvo Amazon, SAAB 96 and Mini!!!) and a variety of exciting terrains/courses with great graphics,

GPL sounds like it's a great sim, but for the life of me I can't find any screen shots of cars or courses.  I found lots of dedicated web-sites, but no links to screen shots would go through.  It was like pictures were a big secret of something.  I must have spent 20 or 30 min at GPL sites and never saw one damn picture of a car or track.
If anyone has a link to working screen shots of GPL cars or courses, please post them.  I also never found a list of available cars.

Cabby,
I would never say that driving on oval tracks takes less skill, I just think that I would get bored looking at nothing but walls and grandstands, making only left hand turns when I could be zipping along an always changing mountain road with trees, cliffs and whoopty-doo jumps.

Lastly,
I never posted at the top that I want a sim that is playable out-of-the-box, I guess I just assumes they all were...  I don't want to down-load a bunch of stuff to make it worth playing...
Are both of these (GPL and RT) playable out-of-the-box offline?
Also, when you crash in either of them can you just click "drive" and go again?
I sure as hell don't want to "virtually fix" a car before I drive it again (I get the impression that this is a "feature" of some racing sims...).

eskimo -

Rally Trophy is good to go out of the box, though there is a small developer-released patch that I recommend installing that improves some of the playback tools, and gives you more controller support.  It doesn't take any user add-ons to look and sound good, or to play well.  If you don't want oval track racing, you can't do better.

Eskimo, you need to try out GPL online racing with the GROWL league. We race every Saturday night, and it's a blast. Nothing like racing against your friends every week!

We have around 10-15 regulars each week, all from Aces High, Warbirds and WW2OL. It's a great group of guys. Stop by the GROWL BBS at the URL in Cabby's post, and we'll get you taken care of. :)
