Can anyone recomend a good car racing game?
« on: March 17, 2002, 02:07:16 PM »
The only PC/video games that I have ever played are a few WWII flight sims and Myst/Riven.
I've always wanted to try out a decent car racing game, but don't know jack about them and don't want to shell out the bucks and time to mess around with lame ones.
What I want is:
* A not so new game that my old P-2 / 350 can handle and that I can find on E-Bay or on sale for cheap.
* A non-oval NASCAR type boring race track.  Something with right and left turns or rally/street racing.
*Realistic.

Thanks,
eskimo

You should probably check out Grand Prix Legends.  Although i've never played it b/c im a panzy, oval track lover.  I've heard great things about it from everyone here and it seems there are literally tons of mods that keep this game going and so on....This is the min/pref. specs taken from the official website

Minimum:
Windows 95/98, 166MHz Pentium, 32 mb Ram, Windows compatible video card with 2mb of memory, 2x-CD-ROM.

Preferred:
266MHz Pentium II, Rendition or 3DFx accelerator card, 64mb Ram, Windows 95/98 compatible sound, steering wheel and pedals.

Thanks Nacho,
That sounds like a good one.
I didn't mean to bash ovals or NASCAR, I just don't like crowds and repetition.  BTW, I just saw on TV an 11 car pile up at Darlington... Ouch!

Completely agree with Nacho. GPL is terrific but just a word of warning. It looks crap straight out of the box No I mean REALLY crap. (No D3D support, only glide - That gives you some idea of how long it's been around).

If you buy it go to http://hotgrids.racesimcentral.com/ and get the updates. Then spend many happy hours downloading and installing the different cockpit packs, Scenery patches and of course the extra tracks. It really brings the game up to at least GP3 levels (IMO). Finally when you think you are good enough get "winvroc" and try it out online. It will take you ages to outgrow this. Also FFB support is as good as any other driving sim out there.

Oh nearly forgot expect to "spin" a lot.

No offense to you guys, but screw that boring-ass round track crap!

Rally racing is where it is at!

Don't walk, RUN to the store and buy Rally Trophy .

If you can find a copy of Colin McRae 2.0, that isn't bad either, but Rally trophy is king!  Graphics are terrific, sounds are authentic, physics are good, tracks are varied and interesting - and they aren't loops.  I can't give the game enough praise - simply the most driving fun I've had.

Oh... you want game for a slower machine, don't you... Colin McRae's minimum is a 233, so it might be an option... you can also check ebay for the out of print Mobil 1 Rally Championship - which is regarded as one of the best Rally games around, though not as good as these other two, imho.  The minimum for Rally Trophy is a 300mhz... it's new, but it is only $30.

GPL if u wanna race online and offline and get as real as u can +)

Rally Trophy rocks if u like rally.  Though the cars are alien to most yanks.

Rally trophy is early 70's rally racing with Ford escorts, Lancia stratos, saab, Alfa, fiat etc
Great fun game

And check out my addons for the game at

CART racing for Rendition. Does that card still exist?

Upgrade and get Nascar 2002, or do 47 updates and spin in GPL.

If you like Sportscar racing, get F12001 from EA and checkout this MOD.   http://www.rsdg.net

GPL , but its a real steep learning curve

Dirt Track Racing/Dirt Track Racing - Sprint Cars, is oval type racing, but is an excellent game.
