I want realism
« on: March 25, 2000, 02:02:00 AM »
HTC.. I want realism in this sim.  I'm simply not happy with what you have provided us with so far.

Things that are needed:

1.  No instant replaning.  Instead, every flight should be preceded with a pre-flight inspection.  I'm sure we could get real-world data on exactly what was involved for the average sortie and impliment it here.  Things like forgetting to pull wheel chocks.. or not charging the guns should be modeled as well as forgetting firing carts in the bomb racks.

2.  Even if pre-flight is done, there should be no guarantee that your plane will start.

3.  While flying, objects such as powerlines and birds should be modeled.

4.  Find a way to model a command structure.  If you don't do what your commander says... you go to prison.

5.  Make the bullets truly fatal. After all, you are not going to really try to avoid a cannon unless you fear what it will do to you.

6.  Model those soldiers on the ground that had guns and would get pissed off if an enemy plan simply hovered around them at 500 feet.

7.  Model rain showers that limit visibility to near nothing... preventing launch for hours or even days.

8.  Make the bases be hundreds of miles apart.

9.  Put camoflauge on gun emplacements.

10. Put factories in the middle of cities with no real identifying features.

11. Provide pilots with faulty inteligence reports.

12. Write letters to spouces informing them of their untimely demise for the sake of the Nation's interests.

13. Have the sheep fight back on occation.  Bloody shins are always embarrasing.

14. Simulate pilot exaustion due to too much flying and not enough sleeping.

15. Simulate exaustion caused by realizing that over half the people you have known for the last year are dead.

16. Simulate lack of supplies... such as hopping in an aircraft to see an "sorry no gas" note on the flight stick.

17. Simulate M&M enterprises.  Ocassionaly as a pilot bails, instead of a chute he should just see an "iou" and keep falling.

18. Simulate bean-counters in upper management.  What good simulation doesn't model management correctly?

I'm running out of ammo here.. I'm sure some others can think of plenty more things that should just be a little more realistic.  After all, we really love to use "realism" to support whatever petty grievance we have in any situation.  Better make sure we aren't just being selective with the term.

How about mission booze.  I think that if the U.S. Government saw fit to buy it's pilots a few drinks after every successful mission than we should expect no less out of HTC, right? I'll be checking the mail....

I hope you are joking AKDejaVu?  I'm all for realism, but I dread the day that I have to say "Can't play AH now because there's a giant thunderstorm over my base and the mechanics all have hangovers from the beer that Uncle Sam gave them."    (Besides, from one Oregonian to another, do we REALLY need anymore rain???   )

I like realism. I like it a lot. But if the realism means that AH will be unplayable ,then FORGET IT.

1-In WWII there were aircraft that took off as soon as a warning was given. Ask RAF on 1940 or Luftwaffe in 1944,so respawn time isn't that unrealistic.

2-And add faulty engines, overheating 100% engine running, low octanage fuel...all this would make game unplayable. No way, IMHO.

3-powerlines, ok...maybe...but BIRDS? hey man I have enough problems avoiding that spit trying to HO me, so dont put me a bird HO-ing me too!!

4-If this thing is modelled, then I'm gone. In my free time I DO WHAT I WANT, THE WAY I WANT and I FOLLOW ORDERS IF I WANT! so clear as that. I have enough orders and tasks in my days to come here and have to follow MORE orders.

5-Cannon rounds NOT fatal? Hey man, come in a p51 and HO my Fw190 and see what happens ok?(and I wont talk about F4U1-C)

6-good point. Yes, soldiers may defende themselves. Give them some 7.9mm MGs, but not very accurate...that is REALISTIC and PLAYABLE. I agree.

7-you men simply dont understand that people like me run at 14FPS when near clouds. Rain will kill tha FR forever. Sorry I cant support this.

8-HUNDREDS? do you want to get bored? No way, man the distances right now arent realistic but they are PLAYABLE.

9-well I have real problems to see where are gun emplacements. Maybe becayse I suck at bombing so here I wont say anything.

10-see avobe. I dont really mind it as I rarely bomb.

11-here we start again...we want a playable sim, and there is nothing more annoying that flying 20 minutes to reach some destination to intercept an enemy...to see there is no such enemy! realistic? yes. Playable? no.

12-I take it as a joke...but It would be fun to see the letter after you are a red spot on the landscape

13-oh, yes...SHEEP fites back!

14-? man I get enuf Exhausted when I keep on playing until 4 am, to see that the computer IS ALSO exhaused

15-look #14

16-Lack of supplies is done by bombing airfield depots, tanks and so. It would be good to see that bombing the city's fuel tanks, the GENERAL fuel situation is at 50% in EVERY field...yeah, that way yes. But if you talk that a RANDOM event not controlled by players makes a field to be W/O fuel...then I disagree.

17-bah, if Bails counts as deaths...why implement this?

18-As I am a limited-english-speaker I dont understand a word of this...so I wont say anyting

IMHO realism is wonderful. But if it is going to kill the fun ,then forget realism. IS as simple as that. I wont pay 30$ a month to fly a hundred miles to the next base...or to be given orders...or so...

LOL - I really like this idea - heres a few more:-
1. Random spanners left in controls by mechanics.
2. Birds nests on engines catching fire.
3. Random Rabbit holes dug in the grass runways.
4. Local girlfriens waving handkerchiefs at the airfield fence as you take off.
OHHH yessss this could be sooo much better...

DJ can be a little inscrutable at times.  For those of you that aren’t familiar with his slightly bent sense of humor or for whom English is your second language; I suspect that most of the points he has listed were typed with tongue planted firmly in cheek, with just enough valid ones to reel you in.

Regards,
Wab

Hi all,

Yeah, I know how to make AH pilots really afraid of being shot down in this game. There are some ports in the hardware which you can manipulate to dammage it. So, when someone start pinging you -- BANG! no video card. Next ping got your elevator? That mean you lost hard drive. The last one gets your display. When you crash on the ground the power generator in the basement blow! Yeah, that will make us to think when to engage

Some intriguing ideas AKdejaVu.  Not sure if I should take them all as tongue in cheek comments.  Some look possible and do-able.

However, you forgot the ultimate reality of war and combat.  The first time you die is the last.

There might be ALOT logical problems..
I like part of the ideas and dislike part of them as too realistic.. (got to see that we have unlimited life and also 1000 times more enemies, not a flight without seeing one!)

Then theres also paying customer, I guess you know what kind of mess comes up if half of those dweebs gets in mind that something is wrong, just because it's too realistic and they wan't arcade

Yah, I need to add another thing ,after a runway gets hit by a 500 pound bomb the planes in here have the amazing ability to vibrate their molecules and go thru the craters hmm interesting fact isn't it.

WHY DON'T THEY SINK INTO THE CRATERS I WANT TO KNOW??!!!??
